Free Pokémon Pokopia Update and “Bubbly Basin” DLC Arrive This August

Nintendo used its June 2026 Nintendo Direct presentation to outline the post-launch plans for Pokémon Pokopia, revealing both free updates and a multi-stage expansion roadmap for the popular title.
The announcement follows earlier hints that additional content was on the way, including references to in-game purchases found in the game’s ESRB rating and various reports suggesting downloadable expansions were being prepared.

A free update scheduled for August 2026 will introduce the Dive ability, giving Ditto the ability to venture underwater for the first time and explore submerged areas of the world.

At present, Ditto cannot properly navigate deep water and automatically reappears on land after remaining submerged for more than a brief period.

The August update will focus on expanding exploration and building possibilities through underwater environments and related gameplay features.

Launching alongside the free update will be the game’s first paid Expansion Pass content, which introduces a brand-new region called Bubbly Basin.

This new area will feature additional Pokémon species, fresh environments to discover, and new opportunities for exploration beyond the existing game world.

Footage shown during the Nintendo Direct highlighted a variety of upcoming additions, including previously unseen locations, new habitat types, extra items, and expanded building options.

The trailer also indicated that players will gain access to new construction materials and resources as part of the expansion content.

Nintendo provided further insight into the upcoming features during both the Direct presentation and a follow-up Nintendo Treehouse showcase, offering a more detailed look at what players can expect.

Prior to this announcement, the only post-release content officially revealed for Pokémon Pokopia consisted of seasonal events featuring Pokémon such as Hoppip and Sableye.
The Expansion Pass roadmap extends beyond the Bubbly Basin release, with additional content planned for late 2026 and a further update introducing a new town area in 2027.

Nintendo confirmed that these future content packs will be included as part of the Expansion Pass and will not be offered as standalone purchases.
It is expected that the Expansion Pass may also be included through Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack benefits, although official confirmation has not yet been provided.
Players who pre-order the Expansion Pass will receive several bonus items, including 30 rare Pokemetal Ingots, a recipe that allows the creation of Ditto blocks, and an exclusive in-game wallpaper.

The overall release approach resembles the long-term downloadable content strategy used for Dragon Quest Builders 2, which expanded over time through multiple DLC releases and substantial free updates.
That title gradually added new gameplay systems, furniture collections, fishing features, and later story-related content through a combination of paid and free updates.

Pokémon Pokopia is currently available on Nintendo Switch 2, with its post-launch content rollout beginning in August 2026 through the free Dive update and the launch of the Bubbly Basin Expansion Pass, followed by additional expansions planned for late 2026 and 2027.
