Haruhi Suzumiya Celebrates 20th Anniversary with New Video and Visuals

The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya anime series is celebrating its 20th anniversary with the launch of a new commemorative project and official website.

A special three minute memorial video has been released featuring iconic scenes and lines set to the opening theme song Bouken Desho Desho? and the ending theme song Hare Hare Yukai.

The series originally debuted in Japan on April 3, 2006, and was followed by a second season in 2009 and the feature film The Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya on February 6, 2010.

Illustrator Noizi Ito has also contributed a new 20th anniversary visual featuring the seven main characters to mark the milestone:

The original Japanese voice cast members Aya Hirano, Tomokazu Sugita, Minori Chihara, Yuko Goto, and Daisuke Ono shared a congratulatory message video on the Kadokawa anime YouTube channel.

Plans for a 20th anniversary exhibition have also been announced, though few details have been revealed other than the event is set to take place in Tokyo during August 2026.

The franchise is based on the light novel series by Nagaru Tanigawa and follows Kyon, a cynical student who joins a club for supernatural phenomena founded by his eccentric classmate Haruhi Suzumiya.

Both seasons of the television series directed by Tatsuya Ishihara and the film directed by the late Yasuhiro Takemoto are currently available for streaming on Crunchyroll.
