Chiikawa’s new official cookbook includes seriously cute culinary creations
The Japanese publisher Kodansha has released a new children’s cookbook based on the massively popular “Chiikawa” franchise.
“Chiikawa” is a creation of the illustrator Nagano and follows the daily lives of small, cute animals like the main character Chiikawa, the talkative cat Hachiware, and the unpredictable rabbit Usagi.
The series has grown into a cultural phenomenon, known for its mix of charming aesthetics and relatable themes like work, anxiety, and friendship, which has seen it become hugely popular among both children and adults.
Due to its immense popularity, Chiikawa merchandise is often released in conjunction with well-known brands, with two recent collaborations with Sanrio and Converse being particularly sought after by fans.
The new cookbook, titled “Chiikawa’s Surprise Cooking”, looks to introduce children, and perhaps some adults, to basic culinary science.
The core concept of the cookbook is to demonstrate the surprising transformations that occur during the cooking process, aiming to teach readers about how heat and mixing ingredients can cause changes in a food’s color, texture, and shape.
“Chiikawa’s Surprise Cooking” is structured to be an enjoyable activity for parents and children to do together, presenting simple and accessible recipes.
Included dishes are items like baked meringue and a pizza-style potato “mochi” snack, which are designed to produce visually interesting results.
Kodansha also suggests that the book’s educational angle makes its recipes suitable for summer vacation “free research” projects.
This type of independent study project is a common assignment for schoolchildren in Japan during their summer break.
The cookbook provides a way for fans to interact with their favorite Chiikawa characters while learning highly valuable fundamental cooking skills.
“Chiikawa’s Surprise Cooking” is priced at 1,650 yen (approx. $11.25 USD / £8.29 GBP) and is now on sale from bookstores across Japan and Amazon Japan.
The release of the cookbook comes as the Chiikawa anime has been confirmed to return this July, following a three-month break.
