Chiikawa Makes History with Third Straight Japan Character Award Grand Prix Win

The winners of the Japan Character Award 2026 have been revealed, recognizing some of the most successful licensed brands and character properties in the Japanese entertainment industry.
Established in 2009, the annual awards program was created to promote the value of character licensing and encourage continued growth throughout the sector.

Each year, the awards spotlight the characters, brands, and licensing initiatives that made the greatest impact during the previous year, making the event one of the industry’s most closely watched benchmarks.
The Japan Character Award 2026 ceremony was held on June 17, 2026, celebrating the achievements of the country’s leading licensed properties and character brands from the previous year.

Among this year’s recipients, Chiikawa emerged as the standout success story by securing the event’s highest honor once again.
Created by illustrator Nagano, Chiikawa has grown into one of Japan’s most recognizable modern character franchises through its manga, animation, merchandise, and extensive licensing partnerships.

The series follows the everyday adventures of the small and lovable Chiikawa alongside friends Hachiware and Usagi, combining adorable character designs with unexpectedly emotional and surreal storytelling.
Chiikawa captured the prestigious Japan Character Award Grand Prix title for the fourth time overall in 2026, having previously won in 2022, 2024, and 2025.

The latest victory also marks an unprecedented third consecutive Grand Prix triumph, a feat that has earned the franchise official Hall of Fame status within the awards program.
During the ceremony, Spiral Cute representative Yoichi Kawakami expressed gratitude for the recognition and described it as a significant opportunity for the franchise.

Kawakami stated that the team hopes to turn the achievement into long-term growth, with the goal of ensuring Chiikawa remains a beloved property not only today but for decades to come.

He also emphasized the ambition of building Chiikawa into a timeless franchise capable of bringing happiness to fans for the next 10 to 20 years and beyond.

In addition to winning the Grand Prix, Chiikawa was also recognized with the Character License Award, further highlighting its continued commercial strength and licensing success.
The Character License Award category also honored Tamagotchi and Monchhichi for their achievements in the licensing marketplace.

The New Face Award was presented to good morning in recognition of its emergence as a notable new property within the industry.
Bonbon Drop 3D Clear Bubble Stickers received the Product Licensee Award for its successful licensed merchandise efforts.

The Promotion Licensee Award went to the “Ultraman Monster Tower Tour” campaign for its promotional achievements.

Kiddy Land Shinjuku Flagship Store, which opened in 2025, was selected as the recipient of the Retail Award.

Two properties received Jury Special Awards, with recognition going to Myaku-Myaku, the official mascot of Expo 2025 Osaka Kansai, and Narumiya Characters.

The full list of winners reflects the remarkable diversity and commercial power of Japan’s character and licensing industry, which continues to generate successful collaborations across entertainment, retail, events, and consumer products.
Chiikawa’s record-setting third consecutive Grand Prix victory, however, remains the defining story of this year’s ceremony, further demonstrating the franchise’s extraordinary popularity and influence within the marketplace.
