Sanrio’s Kuromi Is Opening Her Very Own Department Store This Halloween

Sanrio is giving Kuromi her very own mysterious department store for Halloween, which will see three floors of a location in Tokyo’s Shibuya district transformed into a spooky immersive experience.
“KUROMI’S MYSTERIOUS DEPARTMENT STORE” will fill MEDIA DEPARTMENT TOKYO with interactive cosmetics and fashion displays, surprise effects, exclusive merchandise and several areas designed to make visitors feel as though they have stepped directly into Kuromi’s world.

Kuromi debuted in 2005 as My Melody’s self-proclaimed rival and has grown into one of Sanrio’s most popular characters, with her black jester hood, pink skull and mischievous personality giving her a strong connection to alternative fashion and Halloween imagery.

The event forms part of Sanrio’s ongoing “World Kuromification Project,” which encourages fans to embrace their individuality and become the person they want to be.

That wider project has also expanded Kuromi’s music career, most recently through her first official collaboration with Ado on “DND feat. KUROMI,” a song built around ignoring outside noise and continuing toward your own goals.

Visitors to “KUROMI’S MYSTERIOUS DEPARTMENT STORE” begin on the first floor at “KUROMI’S INFORMATION COUNTER,” where Kuromi welcomes guests and provides a map before they enter the department store through a hidden passage marked by her silhouette.

The second floor is divided into cosmetics and boutique areas filled with interactive displays and photo opportunities.

The “KUROMI’S MYSTERIOUS COSMETICS SHOP” includes fictional beauty products created around Kuromi’s style, including extremely long false eyelashes named “SUPER LONG LONG LASHES” and the hood-coloring product “HOOD COLOR MAGIC”.

Nearby, “KUROMI’S MYSTERIOUS BOUTIQUE” displays fashion accessories with hidden tricks, including a bag that suddenly begins laughing.

Additional effects are triggered by approaching mirrors and displays, with Kuromi unexpectedly appearing inside reflective surfaces and other fixtures beginning to move.

At certain times, an enormous Kuromi also appears outside one of the windows and peers into the building.

The third floor contains the event’s most secretive area, presented as a space where only Kuromi is normally allowed to enter.

Sanrio has deliberately kept the exact contents of this section hidden, leaving visitors to discover its effects as they move through the final part of the experience before receiving a message from Kuromi.

Everyone attending will receive an original department-store map and a balloon on a stick, with additional rewards available through activities inside the venue.

Completing a visitor survey earns an exclusive sticker featuring Kuromi in her dress look, while answering three questions through Sanrio’s “Omoide Badge” app unlocks a limited digital badge and a second sticker featuring her ghost-themed design.

A dedicated shop on the first floor will also offer original “KUROMI’S MYSTERIOUS DEPARTMENT STORE” merchandise ahead of its wider release.
Some of the first confirmed items include:
- “Mascot” – ¥2,860 (approximately $18/£14)

- “Candy-style Acrylic Charm” – ¥770 (approximately $5/£4), available in purple and blue designs

- “Multi Ring+” – ¥1,628 (approximately $10/£8)

- “Department Store T-Shirt” – ¥4,950 (approximately $31/£24), available in black

Customers spending at least ¥4,400 will receive their purchases inside an original event shopping bag while supplies last, with some visitors also selected to receive a ticket for the venue’s dedicated photo sticker machine.

Kuromi is also heading into Halloween with several other seasonal releases and collaborations, including a recent Godiva collection that transforms her and Pompompurin into black cats.

Sanrio has also explored Kuromi’s fashion side through the “All Black Kuromi Mode Series,” which gives her Gothic, Girly and Casual makeovers across plushies, bags, accessories, beauty products and stationery.

Another recent collaboration with Cosme Kitchen pairs Kuromi with My Melody across cosmetics, skincare and accessories from several Japanese beauty brands under the theme “HUG YOURSELF”.

Her October 31 birthday is receiving its own celebration through FuRyu’s “Kuromi’s ♡ Birthday Party ♡” collection, which places Kuromi and My Melody in elaborate idol-inspired stage outfits created specifically for the occasion.

“KUROMI’S MYSTERIOUS DEPARTMENT STORE” will run at MEDIA DEPARTMENT TOKYO in Shibuya from October 19 through November 1, 2026, with admission completely free and no advance reservation required.
The venue will normally open from 11:00 AM until 8:00 PM, with final entry at 7:30 PM, although opening day will begin later at 2:00 PM.
Timed entry tickets may be distributed if the venue becomes crowded, and visitors cannot enter the merchandise area without first completing the main event experience.
