The Pokémon Company has officially announced plans to implement a new identity verification system utilizing the national “My Number Card” for the Pokémon Card Game in Japan.
This major policy update, which effectively asks fans to use government issued ID to purchase sought after trading card releases, aims to directly combat the ongoing issue of bulk purchasing and unauthorized resale that has heavily impacted the trading card market.
Securing access to new releases and premium events has become increasingly difficult for genuine players due to the sheer volume of automated purchasing programs and bad-faith actors.
Retailers across the country have previously attempted to implement their own extreme countermeasures to deter the thriving secondary market.
Common store-level tactics included removing the outer shrink wrap from booster boxes at the register to immediately devalue the product for sealed collectors.
Some shops even recently resorted to physically cutting the tops off individual booster packs at the point of purchase to ensure the cards could not be resold as untampered products.
While these localized efforts helped, implementing a strict government-issued ID requirement serves as a robust, centralized countermeasure against bad actors attempting to exploit digital systems.
By also linking tournament registration directly to a verified national identity, organizers can guarantee that only actual human players are filling the tournament brackets.
This level of strict authentication ensures that the dedicated community can continue to safely enjoy the strategic battles that define the tabletop experience.
The new security measure will require users to authenticate their official “Players Club” accounts using the IC chip embedded within the Japanese My Number Card.
Players will simply need to scan the physical identification card using a compatible smartphone and an approved external verification service.
Organizers addressed privacy concerns by confirming that the system only utilizes the electronic certificate for user identification and the visual face-of-card information input assistance feature.
The Pokémon Company clarified that they will never directly acquire or store an individual’s actual twelve-digit personal identification number.
The verification system is currently planned to cover the following operational areas:
- Registration applications for official competitive tournaments held across Japan
- Priority lotteries and sales for select items on the official online storefront
Management warned players that the government application process to receive a physical My Number Card generally takes between one to two months to complete.
Officials recommend that active competitors who do not currently possess the required identification begin the application process immediately to avoid missing out on future opportunities.
