Gunpla Spotlight: RG 1/144 God Gundam Earns Its Reputation as One of the Best Real Grades Ever Made
Image by Charlotte DavisMobile Fighter G Gundam brought an entirely different style of combat to the Gundam franchise, replacing traditional military battles with spectacular martial arts showdowns between powerful mobile fighters, including Domon Kasshu’s legendary God Gundam.
The “RG 1/144 GOD GUNDAM”, also referred to as Burning Gundam in the original English dub, captures the Neo Japan representative’s signature fighting style in Bandai’s popular Real Grade Gunpla line, with an exceptionally flexible design capable of performing elaborate martial arts poses, devastating kicks, and the iconic God Finger attack.

First appearing in the 1994 anime Mobile Fighter G Gundam, the GF13-017NJII God Gundam was developed as the successor to Domon’s original Shining Gundam, taking over as his primary machine during the final stages of the 13th Gundam Fight tournament.

Unlike the traditional wars depicted in other Gundam series, G Gundam revolved around a global competition in which representatives from different nations battled for political supremacy, with Domon competing on behalf of Neo Japan while searching for his missing brother, Kyoji Kasshu.

God Gundam was specifically engineered to make better use of Domon’s exceptional martial arts abilities, incorporating improved performance and a powerful Hyper Mode that amplified its combat capabilities.

Its techniques included the devastating God Finger, which concentrated energy into the machine’s hand for powerful close-range attacks, and the Sekiha Tenkyoken, an ultimate technique inherited from Domon’s former mentor and rival, Master Asia.

These abilities played a major role in some of the anime’s most memorable battles, including Domon’s confrontations with Master Asia’s Master Gundam and the monstrous Devil Gundam.

For its Real Grade interpretation, which is widely considered one of the line’s best releases, Bandai placed an enormous emphasis on articulation, developing an intricate internal structure inspired by the movement of the human body to give the model an exceptionally wide range of motion.

Advanced MS Joint mechanisms in the shoulders and wrists allow God Gundam to perform its signature folded-arms pose, while extendable shoulder joints provide additional clearance for more demanding fighting stances.

The torso incorporates multiple articulation points that allow the upper body to bend forward, backward, and sideways, with a three-axis neck mechanism enabling the head to tilt, turn, and extend forward naturally.

Bandai also developed an intricate knee mechanism that mimics the movement of human muscles, with sections of the rear thigh compressing as the knee bends and the surrounding armor shifting to accommodate the movement.

Sliding hip joints and adjustable waist armor make it possible to raise the legs for high kicks, while the specially engineered feet can remain flat against the ground even when the model is positioned in an almost complete sideways split.

The model also includes several opening armor mechanisms associated with God Gundam’s powerful Hyper Mode, allowing sections of the chest, shoulders, and legs to expand while the fins extending from its backpack can be repositioned.

Its detachable Core Lander can be displayed as a separate craft or connected to the Gundam’s back, where its prominent wing-like sections form an important part of the machine’s silhouette.

For God Finger attacks, articulated components around the fingers and thumb allow the hand to be positioned in its signature attacking stance, while interchangeable hand parts provide additional options for martial arts poses.

Bandai also includes a striking circular energy effect made from layered PET sheets, allowing builders to display the glowing sun-like halo that appears behind God Gundam during its most powerful attacks.

Additional accessories include two God Slash beam swords, a selection of interchangeable hands, and a sheet of Realistic Decals for adding further details to the completed model.

Builders looking to expand their God Gundam display can also consider the separate “RG 1/144 EXPANSION SET FOR GOD GUNDAM,” a Premium Bandai-exclusive release that adds effect parts for God Finger, Sekiha Tenkyoken and other attacks, alongside the Fuunsaiki horse, display stands and additional accessories.

For fans interested in collecting Domon’s mobile suits, the “RG 1/144 SHINING GUNDAM” makes an ideal companion, offering a detailed model of God Gundam’s predecessor with its own advanced articulation and transformation into the powerful Super Mode.

Bandai also released the Gundam Base-exclusive “RG 1/144 GOD GUNDAM HYPER MODE,” which uses four different gold-plated finishes to capture the machine’s glowing appearance in the anime, complete with a dedicated display stand and additional presentation accessories.

Originally released in Japan on August 13, 2022, the “RG 1/144 GOD GUNDAM” is a general retail Gunpla kit that should be available from most reputable Gunpla stockists, subject to availability.

In Western markets, recent re-releases of the kit may be labelled as “RG 1/144 BURNING GUNDAM” based on the alternate name used in the English dub.
Although it is not currently in stock through Premium Bandai US, the kit has appeared there regularly, so it’s worth checking back from time to time if it is sold out elsewhere.
