Animation studio Kinema Citrus has released the second key visual for its upcoming original anime series Goodbye, Lara during a stage event at AnimeJapan 2026.

The newly unveiled artwork depicts the story’s central characters overlooking the scenic Lake Biwa in Shiga Prefecture as seagulls soar through the air.

This project serves as a special production to commemorate the 15th anniversary of Kinema Citrus, the studio known for its work on high-profile adaptations.

Inspired by the classic fairy tale The Little Mermaid by Hans Christian Andersen, the series re-imagines the narrative within the setting of modern-day Japan.

The plot follows the journey of Lara, a mermaid who originally sought the love of a human prince but ultimately dissolved into sea foam after her efforts failed.

Two centuries after those tragic events, Lara is reincarnated in the waters of Lake Biwa and begins a new quest to find a genuine romantic connection.

Direction for the series is being handled by Takushi Koide at Kinema Citrus, with Shiori Tani providing the character designs.

The creative team also includes Anna Kawahara as the series composition writer and yuma yamaguchi as the composer for the musical score.

The producers have confirmed that the anime will be broadcast in Japan starting from July 2026.
