Dragon Quest I & II HD-2D remakes to feature a new character alongside new story content

New information has been released for the upcoming HD-2D remake of Dragon Quest I & II.
This new product is a collection that bundles Dragon Quest and its sequel, Dragon Quest II: Luminaries of the Legendary Line, which together form part of the classic “Erdrick/Loto Trilogy.”

Both games have been completely rebuilt in the “HD-2D” graphical style, a visual aesthetic that blends 2D pixel art with modern 3D environments.

It has been revealed that this new version will feature a large amount of new story content that was not present in the original games.

In the Dragon Quest I portion of the collection, players will encounter new races, including fairies and dwarves.

The remake will also feature powerful new enemies and an appearance from a well-known character from Dragon Quest III.

The most significant change is being made to Dragon Quest II, as a brand new, fourth playable party member will be added to the game.

The Princess of Samaltoria (known as Cannock in the English localization) will appear, voiced by Yu Sasahara.

She will join the original trio of the Prince of Lorasia (voiced by Yuma Uchida), the Prince of Samaltoria/Cannock (voiced by Jun Fukuyama), and the Princess of Moonbrooke (voiced by Sumire Uesaka).

This marks a major and unexpected addition to the classic game’s party structure.

The collection is also designed to connect directly with the recently released HD-2D remake of Dragon Quest III.

Players who have save data from that game will be able to experience new story episodes that further strengthen the connections between the three games, as well as witness “surprising developments.”

The “HD-2D Dragon Quest I & II” collection will be released on PC, Switch 2, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and the original Switch.

The game is scheduled to be released on Thursday, the 30th of October, 2025.
Square Enix has announced 2 other HD-2D games. The Adventures of Elliot will be the first action RPG created using the HD-2D style, while the popular Octopath Traveller series will get a prequel game in the form of Octopath Traveller 0.
