Doraemon Tops Japan Box Office For Third Week

Doraemon and Golden Kamuy Lead Japanese Box Office During Mid-March Weekend.
The animated feature Doraemon: Nobita and the New Castle of the Undersea Devil secured the top position at the Japanese box office for the third consecutive week during the period of March 13 to March 15, 2026.
According to data from Kogyo Tsushinsha, the 45th entry in the long-running Doraemon film series generated 357 million yen or approximately 2.24 million USD, from 274,600 admissions over the weekend.
This performance brings the total cumulative earnings for the film to 1.89 billion yen or 11.87 million USD, with a total of 1.47 million tickets sold since its debut.
While successful, the current film’s three-week total represents 90 percent of the earnings achieved by the 2024 predecessor Doraemon: Nobita’s Art World Tales which had reached 2.1 billion yen in the same timeframe.
Securing the third-place spot in its debut weekend was the live-action sequel Golden Kamuy: Abashiri Prison Arc, which opened on March 13, 2026, across 418 screens, including 60 IMAX locations.
The latest installment in the Golden Kamuy franchise earned 368 million yen or 2.31 million USD from 246,900 admissions during its first three days in theaters.
This opening weekend falls short of the January 2024 original film, which debuted at number one with 534 million yen in ticket sales.
Despite the lower box office ranking, the Abashiri Prison Arc achieved the top spot on the Filmarks first-day satisfaction survey with a high average rating of 4.26 out of 5.0 based on 2,177 user reviews.
Cosmic Princess Kaguya! experienced a significant surge in its fourth weekend of release starting March 13, 2026, as it expanded to over 100 theaters nationwide.
The film climbed five positions to reach fifth place on the overall charts and transitioned away from the mini-theater rankings, where it had held the number one spot for three weeks since February 20, 2026.
The anime feature Himitsu no AiPri: Mankai Buzzlume Live! premiered in 122 theaters on March 13, 2026, and managed to secure eighth place in the weekend rankings.
That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime the Movie: Tears of the Azure Sea saw a decline in its third weekend as it dropped four positions to finish in 10th place.
Other new releases failed to crack the top ten, including L’étoile de Paris en Fleur, which opened in 285 theaters on March 13, 2026, despite being directed by Goro Taniguchi.
Historical box office milestones were also noted as Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba Infinity Castle Chapter 1 reached 39.84 billion yen or 250 million USD after 35 weeks in theaters.
The Demon Slayer film is scheduled to conclude its record-breaking theatrical run in most Japanese cinemas on April 9, 2026.
Additionally, Chainsaw Man – The Movie: Reze Arc reached a domestic total of 10.73 billion yen or 67.83 million USD in its 26th weekend of release.
