Nagato Yumoto Onsen Illuminations 2026
Last Updated on March 5, 2026

The historic resort of Nagato Yumoto Onsen is preparing to host its annual winter illumination event which celebrates the intersection of light and sound along the banks of the Otozure River.
As the oldest hot spring destination in Yamaguchi Prefecture with a history spanning over six centuries, the area will transform into a luminous gallery featuring displays at several key locations within the Onshinkawa River Park.
A central element of the festivities involves thousands of lanterns and Hagi yaki pottery lampshades crafted by local students to provide a warm glow throughout the traditional streets.
The event draws deep inspiration from the literary legacy of Misuzu Kaneko, a celebrated poet born in Nagato, by synchronizing the light installations with readings of her influential verses.
Visitors can explore the revitalized town center where many of the displays are integrated into the modern riverside terraces and renovated wooden buildings that define the community’s recent aesthetic renewal.
In addition to the visual spectacles, the program includes interactive components such as a stamp rally where participants can collect various stickers from designated spots around the venue.
Those traveling to the festivities can access the hot spring district via a short ten minute walk from Nagato Yumoto Station on the JR Mine Line or by a scenic drive through the Yamaguchi countryside.
Admission to the riverside illumination areas remains free for all guests, encouraging a wide audience to experience the seasonal transformation of this heritage site after dark.
