Two New Sailor Moon Manhole Covers Arrive in Usagi’s Real-World Tokyo Neighborhood

The iconic magical girl anime and manga series Sailor Moon is officially expanding its real-world presence on the streets of Tokyo through a unique municipal design initiative.
Authorities in the city’s Minato Ward have completed the installation of two brand-new decorative manhole covers, bringing the total number of specialized series landmarks in the municipality to seven.

First debuting in the pages of Nakayoshi magazine in 1991, the monumental work created by Naoko Takeuchi completely revitalized the magical girl genre by blending traditional romance elements with cosmic superhero action.

The story follows a group of teenage guardians tasked with defending Earth from malevolent cosmic forces while navigating their ordinary school lives.

While the overarching mythos frequently references ancient lunar kingdoms, the story is deeply rooted in the actual neighborhoods of Minato Ward, where the main characters live, study, and protect the city.

The initial wave of five street installations primarily focused on the core Inner Senshi and Tuxedo Mask, leaving the roster partially incomplete.

These two latest additions officially introduce the full group of ten protectors to the streets, incorporating the Outer Senshi alongside Sailor Chibi Moon into the colorful cast line-up.
The newest illustrated sidewalk installations feature two distinct full-group thematic variations:
- Ten Sailor Senshi (Sakura) Model
- Location: Near Tokyo Midtown (in front of 7-4-2 Roppongi)

This design positions the entire group of ten cosmic heroes together beneath a canopy of beautifully blooming cherry blossom branches.
- Ten Sailor Senshi (Rainbow) Model
- Location: Near JR Takanawa Gateway Station (in front of 2-21-1 Takanawa)

This variant displays the complete guardian roster gathered together against a vibrant pastel rainbow backdrop.
To assist visitors in navigating the neighborhood and locating every hidden installation, municipal offices have introduced an updated edition of the official design manhole map.

Physical copies will be distributed sequentially starting Wednesday, May 27, 2026, across various regional travel centers, including the Minato Ward Tourism Information Center branches situated at Fuda-no-Tsuji Square and Tokyo Tower.

Fans who cannot visit a distribution point in person can also access a digital version of the map directly via the official Minato Ward website.

For those who can’t quite complete the trek around Minato Ward to visit all 7 Sailor Moon manhole covers, to commemorate the arrival of the fresh designs, local officials have extended the public display window for full-scale replica display pieces of the first five covers.

These high-quality manufacturing replicas will remain on public display at the Minato Ward Tourism Information Center in Fuda-no-Tsuji Square until Wednesday, September 30, 2026.
