Square Enix Confirms Re-Release for Final Fantasy VII Remake’s Official Board Game
Image by Charlotte DavisSquare Enix has opened pre-orders for the return of its Final Fantasy VII Remake competitive board game, giving fans another opportunity to pick up the tabletop release after its original 2024 launch.
Final Fantasy VII Remake reimagines the opening portion of Square Enix’s landmark 1997 RPG, expanding Cloud Strife’s time in Midgar alongside characters including Tifa Lockhart, Aerith Gainsborough and Barret Wallace while introducing major changes to the original story.
“Final Fantasy VII Remake Board Game Materia Hunter” turns one of the RPG’s most important mechanics into a competitive battle over the magical Materia used by characters to access spells and other abilities.
Players select characters from the Final Fantasy VII Remake cast and use their individual abilities to gather Materia while also looking for opportunities to take it away from their opponents.
Matches can be played as a direct one-on-one contest or as a two-versus-two team battle, giving the relatively compact game two different ways to play depending on the group.
The set includes 20 character cards and 80 Materia cards divided between five different Materia types, alongside 20 medal tokens and five Materia tiles, with individual matches designed to last around 20 to 30 minutes.
Both Japanese and English rule sheets are included, which also makes the Japanese release accessible to English-speaking Final Fantasy collectors who don’t want to wait for the upcoming North American reissue.
Final Fantasy VII Remake Board Game Materia Hunter is priced at $44.99 (approx. $45 USD / £34 GBP), with North American pre-orders available through the Square Enix Store.
The North American re-release is currently scheduled for March 2027, while the European version is planned for April 2027.
