Sunrise Kicks Off 50th Anniversary Celebrations With New Artwork Showcasing Anime Classics

A major anniversary initiative has been unveiled to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Sunrise, the legendary animation studio responsible for hundreds of anime titles spanning multiple generations of fans.
Over the course of its history, Sunrise has produced more than 500 different works, many of which have become influential franchises both in Japan and internationally.
Sunrise is now the flagship animation division of Bandai Namco Filmworks and will be implementing various commemorative projects during the three-year period from 2026 to 2028 as the “Sunrise 50th Anniversary” project, to celebrate the 50th anniversary in 2027 of “Invincible Super Man Zambot 3,” the first in-house work produced by the studio, which began airing in 1977.

Among the studio’s most recognizable productions are the Mobile Suit Gundam franchise, The Ideon: A Contact, Aura Battler Dunbine, Code Geass, Tiger & Bunny, and Love Live!, alongside numerous other fan-favorite series.
As part of the “Sunrise 50th Anniversary” campaign, a selection of standout titles from the studio’s extensive catalog has been chosen to receive brand-new illustrated artwork created specifically for the celebration.

In total, 50 newly drawn visuals have been produced, each highlighting a series that has maintained a strong connection with audiences over the years.
The anniversary artwork spans a wide variety of genres and eras, reflecting the breadth of Sunrise’s contributions to anime across its fifty-year history.
Bandai Namco Filmworks has also revealed the project’s key visual, which brings together a range of works from throughout the studio’s history.
The newly created artwork was commissioned specifically for the anniversary project and is scheduled to be showcased as part of the Licensing Japan exhibition beginning on June 17.

Sunrise’s anniversary initiative also includes the launch of a short film project titled “A Voyage to the Future”.
The project will unite six animation studios, including SUNRISE Studios, to produce six original short anime films centered around the shared theme of “the future”.

Two of those productions have already been introduced, including “Haseo Sugoroku” (Dice with Demon), directed by Shuichi Ohara and set during the Heian period.
The story follows a man who wishes for his deceased wife to be revived by the supernatural “Suzakumon Demon,” leading to a mysterious and unsettling tale.

The second announced project, “Metafear,” is a collaborative production between SUNRISE Studios and YAMATOWORKS.
Its story centers on a young girl plagued by nightmares who records and names her dreams, only for an unnamed nightmare to manifest as a monster and spread throughout the world.

“Metafear” is directed by Shuhei Morita, while Tatsuyuki Tanaka is responsible for the character and visual designs.
The anniversary celebrations will also extend beyond artwork and short films, with a completely new Armored Trooper VOTOMS film project already announced.

Titled “Armored Trooper VOTOMS: The Gray Witch,” the new work is planned as a two-part theatrical release, with the first installment currently scheduled to premiere on November 20.
According to Bandai Namco, the newly commissioned illustrations will play a significant role in future anniversary activities and promotional campaigns.

The artwork is also expected to be incorporated into various merchandise releases and other fan-focused initiatives designed to expand opportunities for audiences to engage with their favorite Sunrise properties.
