Square Enix releases new Kingdom Hearts IV images in wake of game cancellation

After the recent cancellation of a KINGDOM HEARTS mobile game, Square Enix has sought to reassure fans that development of KINGDOM HEARTS IV is still underway.
This update follows Square Enix’s cancellation of KINGDOM HEARTS Missing-Link, a location-based smartphone game that was announced alongside KINGDOM HEARTS IV at the series 20th Anniversary Event.

The cancellation of the mobile title, after three years of development and a postponed release, understandably led to some concern among fans about the future of other KINGDOM HEARTS projects.
KINGDOM HEARTS is a series of games that blends the worlds and characters of Disney with original storylines and characters created by Square Enix.

Known for its emotional narratives, engaging combat, and the enduring themes of friendship and light overcoming darkness, the series has become immensely popular with players across numerous console releases since its debut in 2002.
KINGDOM HEARTS IV was first officially announced during the KINGDOM HEARTS 20th Anniversary Event held in April 2022, generating immense excitement among long-time fans.

The announcement included a teaser trailer that offered a first look at the game’s protagonist, Sora, battling Heartless in a strikingly realistic, modern cityscape resembling Tokyo.

This departure from the more fantastical settings traditionally featured in the series sparked considerable discussion and anticipation for the new direction of the story and gameplay.
In their latest update, Square Enix reiterated their commitment to the project, stating:
“KINGDOM HEARTS IV is currently in the works. We will continue to focus on development to ensure that the game meets everyone’s expectations, so we ask for your patience for a little while longer.”

The new update confirming KINGDOM HEARTS IV’s ongoing development and the release of new images appear to be a strategic move by Square Enix to emphasize their continued interest in the franchise following the cancellation of KINGDOM HEARTS Missing-Link.
The newly released in-development images offer fresh glimpses into the world of KINGDOM HEARTS IV.
One image depicts Sora engaged in combat within the modern Japanese cityscape previously seen in the initial reveal trailer, showcasing the evolved visual style and potential gameplay mechanics.

Another image features the iconic Disney character Mickey Mouse exploring what appears to be a library, hinting that sections of the game will be playable with Mickey and perhaps other Disney characters.

While specific details regarding the plot, release date, and other gameplay features of KINGDOM HEARTS IV have not yet been revealed, Square Enix’s continued communication and the unveiling of new images serves as a positive sign for the fans awaiting the next chapter of the series.
