Square Enix cancels upcoming Kingdom Hearts game

The Japanese developer Square Enix has announced that development has ceased on the unreleased game ‘Kingdom Hearts Missing-Link’.
The highly anticipated smartphone game was a location-based title due to be released for iOS and Android devices.

This decision comes approximately three years after the game’s initial announcement in April 2022, when it was revealed during the 20th anniversary celebration of the Kingdom Hearts series.
Kingdom Hearts is an action role-playing game franchise created by Square Enix in collaboration with Disney that has been both critically acclaimed and commercially successful.

The series weaves together characters and worlds from Disney’s animated features with original characters and lore, exploring themes of friendship, light, and darkness.
Kingdom Hearts Missing-Link was originally unveiled alongside the announcement of the next mainline installment in the series, “KINGDOM HEARTS IV” and generated excitement among fans who were eager for a new way to engage with the “Kingdom Hearts” universe on mobile devices.

The location-based gameplay hinted at a real-world interactive experience, allowing players to connect with the game based on their geographical location, a concept popularized by titles like “Pokémon GO”.

According to the official announcement from Square Enix, the decision to halt development stemmed from the conclusion that “it would be difficult to provide a service that satisfies everyone over the long term”.
The company expressed its gratitude to the participants of the various closed beta tests that had been conducted, acknowledging their contributions and repeatedly apologizing for the inability to meet their expectations for the game’s release.
Kingdom Hearts Missing-Link previously saw the release of a teaser trailer on October 30th, 2023, which provided a glimpse into its gameplay and visual style.

Closed beta testing phases were subsequently held, allowing a limited number of players to experience early versions of the game and provide feedback.
Initially planned for a 2024 release, the launch date was postponed on November 19th, 2024, with Square Enix stating that the new release date was to be determined.
The recent announcement of the game’s cancellation signifies the end of its development journey.
Despite the disappointing news regarding “Kingdom Hearts Missing-Link,” Square Enix reassured fans that the development of the “Kingdom Hearts” series as a whole will continue.
The company explicitly stated that the highly anticipated “KINGDOM HEARTS IV” remains in active development, urging fans to look forward to further updates on the mainline title and to continue their support for the ongoing projects within the franchise.
