Pokémon Developer Game Freak Announces New Weather-Powered Magical Girl Game

Game Freak has revealed a completely new mobile game that turns Japan’s real-world weather into part of a magical girl adventure.

Titled “Ame Nochi Hare Onna,” the original project is set in modern-day Japan and follows magical girls known as “Hare Onna,” who transform the weather into power as they work to brighten the lives of people around them.

Their abilities are supported by small divine messengers known as “Kumorin,” with the story following the two groups as they travel across Japan and attempt to make the country a brighter and happier place.

The biggest difference between Ame Nochi Hare Onna, which can be translated as “Rainy Day, Sunny Girl”, and a conventional mobile RPG is its connection to the actual weather, with Game Freak confirming that forecasts from across Japan will directly affect different parts of the game.

Built around the concept of “tomorrow’s weather becoming magic,” the game is intended to make checking the forecast part of the daily experience rather than treating weather as a purely cosmetic background element.

Exactly how those systems will work has not yet been fully explained, although official product information rather unexpectedly describes Ame Nochi Hare Onna as a “laundry game,” suggesting everyday activities could be just as important to its structure as the magical elements.

Game Freak’s privacy documentation also indicates that the app can use location information for location-linked game content and events associated with real-world points, suggesting its connection to everyday life may eventually extend beyond weather forecasts alone.

The first Hare Onna introduced for the game is Himawari Harewatari, a magical girl voiced by Hiyori Kono and designed by illustrator Aki Minamino.

Her partner is Pon Arai, a Kumorin voiced by Yuki Nagano and designed by Game Freak’s Kyoko Abe, with the pair appearing together throughout the newly released key visual and animated teaser.

The key artwork shows a much brighter and more relaxed side of the setting, focusing on the characters beneath a clear sky, while the teaser introduces the game’s magical girl elements and some of the ways weather will influence its world.

Shigeru Ohmori is serving as both director and producer, continuing a career at Game Freak that has included directing major Pokémon titles and more recently working as concept and senior director on Pokémon Pokopia.

Development is being handled jointly by Game Freak and Chronogate, with Chronogate president Katsutaka Suginaka also serving as scenario director on the project.

The announcement comes during a particularly busy period for Game Freak outside its traditional Pokémon work, with the studio having released the post-apocalyptic action RPG Beast of Reincarnation in August 2026.

That project paired protagonist Emma with the canine companion Koo and mixed real-time combat with command-based RPG elements, representing one of Game Freak’s biggest original projects outside Pokémon in recent years.

Ohmori’s other recent project, Pokémon Pokopia, has taken Game Freak in almost the opposite direction, focusing on relaxed town building and everyday activities rather than traditional Pokémon battles.

Pokopia has continued to expand since its March 2026 launch, most recently adding the underwater Bubbly Basin area and new activities through its first Expansion Pass, while also receiving new merchandise and real-world events in Japan.

Ame Nochi Hare Onna gives Game Freak another opportunity to experiment with a very different type of game, combining a contemporary Japanese setting, magical girls and systems connected directly to conditions outside the player’s phone.

Game Freak will be promoting Ame Nochi Hare Onna at Tokyo Game Show 2026 from September 17, where the company is operating a dedicated booth for the title as part of its first announced presence at the event.

The studio previously confirmed that its Tokyo Game Show booth would not feature Pokémon-related titles, making the new original mobile game one of the main focuses of Game Freak’s appearance.

Ame Nochi Hare Onna is being developed for iOS and Android as a free-to-play title with optional in-app purchases, with its currently announced distribution focused on Japan and the Japanese language.

Game Freak has not yet announced a specific release date, with further details expected as development continues and the game makes its upcoming appearance at Tokyo Game Show 2026.
