New Timepiece Celebrates 100 Years of Tokyo Metro’s Oldest Line

A new fashion accessory celebrating the historic Tokyo Metro Ginza Line has been unveiled by the collaborative fashion brand SuperGroupies.
The “Tokyo Metro Ginza Line Model Watch” is a high-end wristwear piece designed to commemorate the upcoming 100th anniversary of Japan’s oldest subway route.

This collaboration focuses on capturing the unique history and visual identity of the railway line, which first opened its doors to the public between Ueno and Asakusa in 1927.

The design of the watch incorporates numerous subtle nods to the subway’s iconic aesthetic, blending functionality with railway enthusiasm.

The center of the dial features a distinct orange ring, the official color used to identify the Ginza Line on maps and station signage throughout Tokyo.

Surrounding this central motif, the indices are marked with the official station numbering symbols.

In a clever design choice, the spacing between these numbers is not uniform but is instead arranged to represent the approximate travel time between stations from Shibuya to Asakusa.

A standout feature of the watch is a small window located on the dial that mimics the front destination display of a train car.

This display automatically changes every two hours, cycling through a variety of destinations and service statuses.

The rotation includes stops such as Shibuya, Gaienmae, Tameike-Sanno, Toranomon, Shimbashi, Ginza, Nihombashi, and Ueno.

It also features specific terminal details like “Asakusa Track 1 Arrival” and “Asakusa Track 2 Arrival,” as well as “Test Run” and “Special Service” indicators.

The strap is made from high-quality leather dyed in a calm, brick-brown hue, reminiscent of the classic architecture found in the line’s older stations.

The reverse side of the strap features an embossed route map that tells the story of the line’s expansion.

The upper portion depicts the initial section that opened between Asakusa and Ueno, while the lower portion displays the subsequent extension from Ueno-hirokoji to Shibuya.

The case back is engraved with an illustration of the 1000 series train, the classic yellow carriage that defined the line for decades.

The Tokyo Metro Ginza Line Model Watch is priced at 26,400 yen (approx. $180.00 USD / £140.00 GBP).
