McDonald’s Unleashes Godzilla x Hello Kitty Happy Meals Across the US This August
McDonald’s is bringing together two of Japan’s biggest pop culture franchises for its next US Happy Meal promotion, transforming Hello Kitty and her Sanrio friends into some of Toho’s most famous kaiju.
The fast-food chain has officially teased the upcoming Godzilla x Hello Kitty and Friends collaboration with the tagline “Cute Meets Kaiju,” confirming that the limited-time promotion will arrive at participating McDonald’s restaurants across the US on August 18, 2026.
Godzilla has grown from the terrifying monster introduced in Toho’s original 1954 movie into one of the world’s most recognizable characters, while Sanrio’s Hello Kitty has similarly become an international icon since making her debut during the 1970s.
Their latest crossover takes a much more playful approach to the King of the Monsters, combining the instantly recognizable appearances of Sanrio characters with costumes and features inspired by different creatures from across Godzilla’s history, and comes hot on the heels of a similar line of crossover merchandise released in Japan back in July.
McDonald’s revealed the collaboration through a short teaser that begins with a Happy Meal box floating alone on the ocean before an enormous Hello Kitty rises from the water wearing a Godzilla-inspired headpiece.
While McDonald’s has yet to formally unveil the complete Happy Meal toy collection, leaked promotional material circulating ahead of the launch appears to reveal eight different crossover designs.
The leaked lineup pairs Hello Kitty with Godzilla, placing the Sanrio mascot inside a costume incorporating the monster’s reptilian appearance, dorsal plates and powerful tail.
Kuromi is paired with Mechagodzilla, exchanging the organic kaiju styling for metallic armor while retaining her familiar black hood and mischievous expression.
Chococat takes inspiration from SpaceGodzilla, incorporating the alien monster’s crystalline features into a design that works particularly well with the character’s pointed ears.
Badtz-Maru becomes Rodan, adapting the giant flying kaiju’s wings and prehistoric appearance around the Sanrio penguin’s familiar shape.
My Melody is paired with Mothra, bringing the kaiju’s colorful wings into a design built around the rabbit character’s softer appearance.
Keroppi receives one of the collection’s more elaborate transformations as King Ghidorah, adding the three-headed monster’s golden coloring, wings and additional heads to the cheerful frog character.
Cinnamoroll takes on Destoroyah, creating an unusual contrast between one of Sanrio’s cutest characters and the destructive monster that served as Godzilla’s final opponent in 1995’s Godzilla vs. Destoroyah.
Pompompurin completes the leaked collection as Gigan, incorporating elements of the cybernetic kaiju into the Golden Retriever character’s rounded appearance.
The promotion follows McDonald’s previous use of Hello Kitty and Friends for crossover Happy Meals, including the 2025 collaboration that combined Sanrio characters with the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.
The Godzilla x Hello Kitty and Friends Happy Meal collaboration launches at participating McDonald’s restaurants across the US on August 18, 2026, with the toys expected to be available for a limited time and while supplies last.
