Gunpla Spotlight: HG 1/144 Shadow Gundam Recreates Neo Germany’s Ninja-Inspired Mobile Suit
Image by Charlotte DavisMobile Fighter G Gundam introduced some of the franchise’s most unconventional mobile suits, but few were as mysterious as Neo Germany’s Shadow Gundam, a ninja-inspired machine whose incredible speed, deadly blades, and extraordinary combat techniques made it one of the most dangerous opponents in the Gundam Fight tournament.
The “HG 1/144 SHADOW GUNDAM” brings Schwarz Bruder’s formidable Mobile Fighter to Bandai’s High Grade Gunpla line, combining its dark armor, twin Spiegel Blades, and agile fighting style with an impressive selection of accessories designed to reproduce some of its most memorable attacks.

First appearing in the 1994 anime Mobile Fighter G Gundam, the GF13-021NG Shadow Gundam, known as Gundam Spiegel in Japan, represented Neo Germany during the 13th Gundam Fight tournament.

Unlike the military conflicts that dominated earlier Gundam series, G Gundam revolved around a competition between representatives of different nations, with each pilot using a specialized Mobile Fighter to battle for political supremacy.
Shadow Gundam was piloted by the masked Schwarz Bruder, an exceptionally skilled martial artist whose mastery of German-style ninjutsu allowed him to perform extraordinary feats of speed, stealth, and acrobatics.

Despite initially appearing as a mysterious rival to Neo Japan’s Domon Kasshu, Schwarz eventually became one of the young fighter’s most important allies, helping him improve his abilities while concealing a secret that would prove crucial to the anime’s larger story.

His Gundam was designed to complement this fighting style, combining remarkable agility with a pair of Spiegel Blades mounted beneath its forearms that could swing forward for close-range attacks.

Schwarz also employed the Messer Glanz, small throwing knives capable of striking opponents from a distance, alongside an electrified net used to restrain enemy Mobile Fighters.
However, Shadow Gundam’s most spectacular technique was undoubtedly Sturm und Drang, which saw the machine extend its blades and spin at tremendous speed, turning itself into a devastating airborne weapon capable of tearing through its opponents.

Bandai’s 1/144 scale High Grade kit was developed with newly molded components that capture Shadow Gundam’s angular armor, dark color scheme, and ninja-inspired proportions, while providing the articulation needed to reproduce its acrobatic combat techniques.

The twin Spiegel Blades incorporate movable mechanisms that allow their positions to be adjusted, with rotating sections and retractable handles providing several options for displaying the weapons during battle.
Interchangeable hand parts also allow builders to recreate Schwarz’s Messer Glanz throwing techniques, including poses where the small blades are held between the Mobile Fighter’s fingers.

One of the kit’s biggest attractions is a specially developed rotating display stand, designed to reproduce the signature Sturm und Drang attack by positioning Shadow Gundam with both Spiegel Blades extended as though spinning through the air.
The included display equipment provides a more elaborate way to present the Mobile Fighter than a conventional action base, capturing one of the anime’s most memorable finishing moves.

Bandai also introduced an original accessory concept developed under the supervision of G Gundam general director Yasuhiro Imagawa, adding five miniature ninja scrolls inspired by different elemental techniques.
Representing Fire, Water, Wind, Wood, and Earth, each scroll carries a combination of Japanese kanji and German text, with the paper incorporating traditional washi material to allow the accessories to be rolled and unrolled.

A dedicated scroll holder can be attached to the rear skirt armor, allowing builders to store the miniature scrolls on the completed model or incorporate them into more elaborate displays.
The kit also reproduces Shadow Gundam’s detachable Core Lander, which can be separated from the main body and displayed independently before reconnecting to the Mobile Fighter.

Additional accessories include a selection of interchangeable hands, joint parts, and an action base, providing further flexibility when recreating Schwarz’s various fighting stances.

For fans interested in collecting the Mobile Fighters from G Gundam, Bandai’s “RG 1/144 GOD GUNDAM” makes an excellent companion to Shadow Gundam, representing Domon Kasshu’s ultimate machine with some of the most impressive martial arts articulation in the Real Grade lineup.

Builders looking for a larger interpretation of Schwarz’s Gundam can also consider the older “MG 1/100 GUNDAM SPIEGEL,” released using the Gundam’s original Japanese name, which brings the same ninja-inspired design to Master Grade with an internal frame, articulated weapons, and its own detachable Core Lander.

Originally released in Japan in September 2026, the “HG 1/144 SHADOW GUNDAM” is a Premium Bandai-exclusive Gunpla kit and is not part of the standard general retail lineup.

The kit is set for release in December 2026 in the US, with Premium Bandai US still accepting pre-orders priced at $42 until November 16, 2026, unless allocations sell out sooner.
