FamilyMart pits “Black Thunder” vs. “Crunky” for new summer Frappé line

Japanese convenience store chain FamilyMart has announced a new promotional campaign that pits two of the country’s most famous chocolate bars against each other in the form of frozen drinks.
The “Chocolate Frappé Showdown” will see the launch of a “Black Thunder Chocolate Frappé” and a “Crunky Frappé.”

The new drinks are part of FamilyMart’s popular Frappé line, which frequently collaborates with well-known confectionery brands and other popular brands like Pokémon.

This event frames the release as a competition between the “zakuzaku,” or crunchy texture of Black Thunder, and the “sakusaku,” or crispy texture of Crunky.
The “Black Thunder Chocolate Frappé” is a returning product, now in its fourth iteration.

Upon its debut in 2022, it set a record as the fastest-selling Frappé in the line’s history, and this new version has been updated with the largest amount of cookie pieces to date to enhance its signature crunchy texture.
Challenging the reigning champion is the all-new “Crunky Frappé.”

This is the first collaboration with the Lotte chocolate bar, which is known for its light and crispy texture from the malt puffs embedded in the chocolate.
The new Frappé aims to replicate this experience by including small “choco puffs” in the drink.

Each of the new frozen drinks is priced at 380 yen (approx. $2.56 USD / £1.91 GBP), including tax.
To support the “showdown” theme, two separate promotional campaigns are being launched.
A campaign for the Black Thunder Frappé will run for the first week of the launch.
Customers who purchase the drink using the FamiPay app will receive a digital coupon for a free Black Thunder chocolate bar.

A separate social media campaign for the Crunky Frappé will be held on the platform X.
By following the official FamilyMart account and reposting the campaign message, 5,000 people will be selected by lottery to win a coupon for a free Crunky chocolate bar.
The new Frappé collaboration is scheduled to launch at approximately 16,300 FamilyMart stores nationwide on Tuesday, the 22nd of July, 2025.
