Hitome Senbonzakura Festival 2026

Last Updated on March 23, 2026

The scenic Shiroishi River in Miyagi Prefecture is preparing for the return of the Hitome Senbonzakura Festival, an event that celebrates one of the most iconic cherry blossom viewing spots in northern Japan.

Visitors will gather to witness the sight of approximately 1,200 cherry trees stretching for eight kilometers along the riverbanks, creating a tunnel of pale pink blossoms against the backdrop of the snow-capped Zao Mountains.

The festival name, which translates to a thousand cherry trees at a single glance, reflects the vast scale of the floral display that has made the area a designated Place of Scenic Beauty.

Stalls featuring local Miyagi specialties and seasonal treats will be set up along the walking paths to accommodate the expected crowds of nature enthusiasts and photographers.

As evening approaches, the trees will be illuminated by special lighting to offer a different perspective of the flowers reflected in the calm waters of the river.

Boat tours are scheduled to operate during the peak blooming period, allowing guests to view the cherry blossoms from the unique vantage point of the water.

The festival grounds are easily accessible from JR Funaoka Station or JR Ogawara Station, providing a convenient route for those traveling from nearby Sendai.

Local officials encourage visitors to utilize public transportation to ensure a smooth experience during this popular spring celebration of natural beauty and regional heritage.
