Voting opens as Gundam fans given the chance to choose which Gunpla kits will be re-released next
BANDAI SPIRITS has kicked off the “MG Runoff Vote 2025” which will determine which Master Grade (MG) Gunpla kits will receive a re-release.
This initiative allows Gunpla enthusiasts to directly influence the availability of popular models that may have become difficult to acquire since their initial production runs.
Gunpla, a portmanteau of “Gundam plastic model”, refers to the model kits depicting the mobile suits and other vehicles from the extensive “Gundam” anime franchise.
The Master Grade (MG) line, first introduced by Bandai in 1995, represents a significant step up in complexity and detail from the more common High Grade (HG) kits.
MG kits are typically 1/100 scale, featuring intricate internal frames, enhanced articulation, and a greater number of parts, providing a more challenging and rewarding building experience for hobbyists.
The voting project specifically targets several sub-categories within the MG line:
- Standard MG kits
- MG Ver.Ka kits – Special versions designed by the famous mechanical designer Hajime Katoki
- MGEX kits – A newer, high-end MG sub-brand introduced in 2020, focusing on “EXtreme EXpression” with advanced gimmicks and materials like extensive metallic finishes and LED units
- MGSD kits – Master Grade Super Deformed, which combine the compact, stylized aesthetic of Super Deformed Gundams with the intricate engineering and detail of Master Grade kits).
Only Gunpla kits that are sold in general retail stores and hobby stores are eligible for this vote and it excludes any Premium Bandai exclusive releases.
The “MG Runoff Vote 2025” was announced earlier this year and follows the precedent set by the “HGUC Decisive Battle Vote” held in 2023, where fan votes similarly determined re-releases for the High Grade Universal Century (HGUC) line.
For this current Master Grade vote, a substantial list of 219 Gunpla kits is available for fans to choose from, encompassing a wide array of mobile suits from various Gundam timelines and series.
The voting process is divided into two main phases.
The first phase, the “primary vote”, started today, July 7th, and will run until July 20th.
During this period, participants can cast votes for any of the 219 eligible Gunpla kits.
Each person is allowed to cast up to two votes per day: one through the dedicated Bandai Hobby website’s special voting page, and another through the “Builder’s Note” app.
Following the primary voting period, interim results will be announced on July 23rd.
These interim results will identify the top 20 most-voted items, which will then proceed to the “runoff vote”.
The final election will be a direct contest among these top 20 contenders and will take place from July 23rd to July 31st, ultimately determining the kits that will be re-released.
The Gunpla kits that emerge victorious from the runoff vote will subsequently be made available for purchase again.
These re-released models will be sold either at general retail stores nationwide or through the Gundam Base Online Shop, an official online retail platform for Gunpla and Gundam merchandise.
It is noted that sales through the Gundam Base Online Shop may be conducted via a lottery system, which is a common practice for highly popular or limited-availability Gunpla kits to manage demand and ensure fair distribution.
