Sword Art Online Set for 2028 Return with New Anime Movie “Integral Domain”

The Sword Art Online franchise has officially unveiled Sword Art Online -Integral Domain-, a brand-new original anime film that is scheduled to arrive in theaters in 2028.
Sword Art Online, created by Reki Kawahara, began as a web novel before becoming one of the world’s most successful light novel and anime franchises, following virtual reality gamer Kirito and his allies through a series of interconnected worlds where survival inside digital realms often carries real-world consequences.

Rather than adapting an existing novel, Integral Domain will tell an entirely original story written by Kawahara that takes place after the events of the Alicization story arc.

Yoshitsugu Matsuoka will once again voice Kirito, while Haruka Tomatsu returns as Asuna, continuing their long-running roles within the franchise.
The film will be directed by Shingo Adachi, who previously served as chief animation director on Sword Art Online and Sword Art Online II, with animation production handled by A-1 Pictures and Psyde Kick Studio.

Character designs are being created by Yumiko Yamamoto, whose previous work includes Sword Art Online: Alicization – War of Underworld and Yohane the Parhelion -SUNSHINE in the MIRROR-.
Anime distributor Animec will handle theatrical distribution for the new movie.
The project has been several years in the making, having first been teased during the Sword Art Online -Full Dive- event in November 2022, which celebrated both the anime’s 10th anniversary and the in-universe launch of the original Sword Art Online game.

Fans received another glimpse of the project earlier this year when a teaser was shown during the Sword Art Online Yuna First Live concert on April 29, with both announcements emphasizing that the film would tell a completely new story outside the events of the original novels.

Kawahara originally published Sword Art Online as a web novel between 2001 and 2008 before Kadokawa’s Dengeki Bunko label began releasing a revised print edition in 2009.
The original storyline concluded with the Alicization arc in the 18th novel volume during 2016, before the series continued with the new Moon Cradle arc in 2017 and the Unital Ring arc in 2018, with the light novel series now reaching its 29th volume.

The franchise has also expanded into manga adaptations, multiple television anime seasons, anime films, the Sword Art Online: Progressive novel series and its accompanying theatrical adaptations, as well as a planned live-action television project.
The Sword Art Online universe will also continue expanding into video games, with the upcoming action RPG Echoes of Aincrad launching in Japan for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S on July 9, followed by a PC release via Steam on July 10, while the Western release across all platforms is scheduled for July 10.

Sword Art Online -Integral Domain- is scheduled to premiere in Japanese theaters during 2028, with additional release details expected to be announced at a later date.
