New Gundam Anime Officially Sets April 2027 Release Date
Gundam’s next major anime has officially set its release window, with Mobile Suit Gundam RG XARX-ZERO confirmed to begin its television broadcast in April 2027.
The announcement narrows the previously confirmed 2027 release down to a specific month and places the new series shortly after the launch of GUNDAM ROGUE ORBIT, the upcoming action game that shares the same universe and history.
Mobile Suit Gundam RG XARX-ZERO was first fully revealed in July 2026 as the anime half of the new “RG Project,” a wider multimedia project designed to tell different parts of one completely new Gundam timeline through animation, games, and other releases.
Rather than adapting the story of GUNDAM ROGUE ORBIT directly, the anime takes place around a century earlier and explores events that helped create the world players will eventually experience in the game.
Both stories are designed to stand on their own while sharing the same history, allowing the anime to show the origins of the setting before the game moves much further forward along its timeline.
XARX-ZERO takes place in the newly created “After Apocalypse” era, where humanity initially experiences unprecedented prosperity after an interstellar object brings three revolutionary technologies to the Solar System.
Those advances include gravity control, faster-than-light communication, and technology capable of materializing images, but the same object eventually loses control and produces an aggressive self-replicating silicon-based ecosystem known as the Apocalypse.
After only three months of fighting, humanity is forced to abandon Earth, with the year of its evacuation becoming A.A. 1 and marking the beginning of the After Apocalypse calendar.
The anime begins in A.A. 45 and follows Ray Azumi, a war orphan who lost his parents during an Apocalypse attack and becomes the pilot of the experimental XARX-0 Gundam ZERO.
Takeo Otsuka voices Ray, while Kenji Kamiyama serves as both director and series composer, with science-fiction author Toh EnJoe supervising the setting and Eiichi Shimizu responsible for the Gundam design.
SOLA ANIMATION is handling production, with Minoko Takasu serving as character designer and supervising animation director, and Go Shiina composing the music.
In an interview conducted during San Diego Comic-Con, Kamiyama described the series as a story centered on humanity’s battle for survival against the Apocalypse alongside the conflicts and growth of the young people living within that world, with the RG Project built around reconsidering why a Gundam needs to exist within its setting.
Fans will get their first major opportunity to explore the shared universe before the anime begins, as GUNDAM ROGUE ORBIT is now confirmed to launch worldwide for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC via Steam on March 5, 2027.
The game follows protagonist RE-X and the ARK-10 Gundam Helix, with its high-speed action built around customizable weapons, frames, thrusters, Apocalypse Units, and color schemes that allow players to alter how their Mobile Suit performs in combat.
Bandai Namco has also recently revealed more of the game’s Mobile Suit lineup, showing off the BMP4/6 Bau Bhalam, a heavily armored machine wielding an enormous physical sword, and the TRA122E/B Calice, which uses more knight-like armor and a large lance.
Both machines belong to newly introduced characters from different parts of the shared universe, with Bau Bhalam piloted by Red Grit leader Big Paul and Calice used by Trezor Council Knight Commander Elaine Galath.
The new project is already expanding beyond the anime and game themselves, with Bandai revealing HG 1/144 Gunpla kits based on both Gundam ZERO and Gundam Helix and later showing painted prototypes of the two machines.
GUNDAM ROGUE ORBIT’s Collector’s Edition will also include an exclusive Earth Blue version of the HG Gundam Helix alongside Gundam Card Game promos and other physical bonuses, while the standard version of the Helix kit is planned separately for 2027.
With GUNDAM ROGUE ORBIT now launching on March 5 and Mobile Suit Gundam RG XARX-ZERO beginning its television run just one month later in April 2027, Bandai’s new shared Gundam universe is set to properly begin across both games and anime within the space of a few weeks.
