Gundam Battle Operation 3 Announced as Bandai Reveals Plans for Major Expansion Beyond Universal Century

Bandai Namco is expanding its long-running Gundam team battle series beyond the Universal Century, with Mobile Suits from alternate timelines set to play a much larger role in its next game.
The newly announced “Mobile Suit Gundam Battle Operation 3” will be released as a free-to-play title for PlayStation 5 and PC via Steam, with cross-play between both platforms and Mobile Suit Gundam SEED included from launch.

Battle Operation 3 retains the series’ mix of Mobile Suit and infantry combat, with its main battles fought between two teams of up to six players each.

Players can leave their Mobile Suits during a match to move around as infantry, plant bombs at enemy bases, request support fire, and secure objectives before returning to their machines.

Custom matches will increase the maximum scale to 9v9, allowing as many as 18 players to take part in a single battle.
Every Mobile Suit will now have its own SP Skill, giving each machine a powerful ability that can influence the course of a match and further separate its role from the rest of the roster.

A new Battle Assist system is being introduced to make combos easier to perform, while the move to Unreal Engine is accompanied by upgraded Mobile Suit models, environments, avatars, and other visual improvements over Battle Operation 2.

One of the biggest changes comes from the roster, with Battle Operation 3 opening the door to a much broader selection of Gundam timelines alongside its established Universal Century machines.

Mobile Suit Gundam, Mobile Suit Gundam: The 08th MS Team and Mobile Suit Gundam 0083: Stardust Memory are among the Universal Century series represented at launch, while Mobile Suit Gundam SEED will become the first confirmed Alternative Universe entry.

Bandai Namco has already shown SEED’s quadrupedal BuCUE as one of the playable machines, emphasizing that the expanded roster will include mass-production Mobile Suits rather than concentrating only on protagonist and rival Gundams.

Another two to three Alternative Universe series are planned to join during the game’s first year, although Bandai Namco has not yet revealed which parts of the wider Gundam franchise will be added next.

Battle Operation 3 follows Mobile Suit Gundam Battle Operation 2, which has remained in active service since 2018 and established the current version of the series’ large-scale online team combat.

Bandai Namco does not plan to operate Battle Operation 2 alongside its successor, and Mobile Suits, items, and other in-game assets accumulated in the current game will not transfer into Battle Operation 3.

The publisher is instead considering rewards based on players’ achievements in Battle Operation 2, with details of those bonuses still to be announced.
The reveal adds another major game to Gundam’s expanding lineup, following the recent announcement of free-to-play mobile strategy title Gundam Blitz Order and its first US and UK network test.

Bandai Namco is also preparing GUNDAM ROGUE ORBIT for a worldwide launch on March 5, 2027, giving the franchise another new action game for PlayStation 5 and PC alongside an Xbox Series X|S version.

Existing Battle Operation 2 players in Japan will get the first opportunity to play Battle Operation 3 through an early network test scheduled for November 20 and November 22, 2026, with applications open from October 29 through November 8.

The test will support PS5 and Steam cross-play and include 6v6 rated matches, custom battles of up to 9v9, two maps and ten playable Mobile Suits, while a wider open network test is planned for a later date.

“Mobile Suit Gundam Battle Operation 3” is currently in development for PlayStation 5 and PC via Steam as a free-to-play game with optional paid content, with its full release date still to be announced.
