Gundam SEED has officially revived one of its classic side-story projects after more than 20 years, unveiling two new Mobile Suit designs to mark the return of its popular MSV series.

“Mobile Suit Gundam SEED FREEDOM MSV” introduces alternative versions of the Rising Freedom and Immortal Justice Gundams, exploring how the powerful machines could be adapted for use by organizations outside the peacekeeping force COMPASS.

MSV, short for Mobile Suit Variations, is a long-running Gundam concept that expands the franchise’s fictional universe by introducing alternative machines, experimental designs, and other Mobile Suits that don’t necessarily appear in the main anime.

The original “Mobile Suit Gundam SEED MSV” was developed through a collaboration between Sunrise and Hobby Japan, running from 2003 to 2004 as an official companion series to the hugely successful Mobile Suit Gundam SEED television anime.

The project expanded the Cosmic Era setting through new mechanical designs, detailed fictional histories, and specially constructed Gunpla models that brought previously unseen Mobile Suits to life.

Its return follows the success of the 2024 theatrical movie Mobile Suit Gundam SEED FREEDOM and will also incorporate designs connected to the forthcoming prequel, Mobile Suit Gundam SEED FREEDOM ZERO.

Gundam SEED FREEDOM MSV brings back several members of the original creative team, including legendary Gundam mechanical designer Kunio Ohkawara, who is responsible for developing additional Mobile Suit variations for the project.

Shigeru Morita of Studio Nue, who contributed to the screenplays for both SEED FREEDOM movies, is handling the mechanical background and machine specifications, with Hobby Japan’s professional modelers transforming the designs into detailed custom Gunpla builds.

The first installment introduces the “STTS-909 Rising Freedom CDE Spec” and “STTS-808 Immortal Justice CDE Spec”, two simplified-production versions of the Gundams operated by Kira Yamato and Shinn Asuka during the events of SEED FREEDOM.

Both machines were originally developed for COMPASS, the international peacekeeping organization established to respond to conflicts following the events of Mobile Suit Gundam SEED DESTINY.

The CDE versions instead explore the possibility of adapting their advanced designs for deployment by other military organizations, introducing a different approach to machines originally associated with two of the franchise’s central pilots.

The first official images reveal extensive changes to their appearance, with both custom models featuring revised head designs, alternative color schemes, and other modifications that distinguish them from the Gundams seen in the movie.

Hobby Japan’s modelers have created the two machines using existing High Grade Gunpla kits as their foundations, extensively modifying the original parts to reproduce the new mechanical designs.

The magazine also provides background information on both Mobile Suits and examines the modeling techniques used during their construction, giving readers a closer look at how the revised designs were developed.

These customized examples are part of the magazine’s official modeling project rather than announcements of new Gunpla, though it may be possible that this will happen in the future, as many MSV designs have gone on to receive official kits.

The revived MSV project has, however, already produced its first premium figure, with Bandai revealing the “METAL ROBOT SPIRITS Rising Freedom Gundam Radiance Grandeur” earlier this month.

That figure explores another alternative configuration for Kira Yamato’s Gundam, equipping the Rising Freedom with the Proud Defender support unit that was originally developed for the machine before ultimately being used elsewhere during SEED FREEDOM.

To celebrate the return of the project, Hobby Japan has also revisited the original “SEED MSV” and “SEED DESTINY MSV” series, commissioning updated Gunpla builds of several older designs using model kits that weren’t available during their initial appearances.

These include a new interpretation of the Sword Calamity Gundam, constructed using the more recent FULL MECHANICS kit and modified to better reflect Ohkawara’s original mechanical artwork.

A special reproduction of the original “Mobile Suit Gundam SEED MSV” is also included with the magazine, featuring high-resolution reproductions of the installments published between January 2003 and May 2004, alongside an interview with Ohkawara.

The project will continue to expand alongside Gundam SEED FREEDOM ZERO, which is officially scheduled to open in Japanese cinemas on January 15, 2027, with additional MSV designs set to be revealed in the near future.
