Gundam SEED MSV Officially Returns After 20 Years with New FREEDOM Project
Image by Charlotte DavisOne of the Cosmic Era’s longest-dormant side projects is officially set to return, with Bandai announcing a new Gundam SEED MSV series more than 20 years after its previous iterations.
Titled “Mobile Suit Gundam SEED FREEDOM MSV,” the project will begin serialization through Monthly Hobby Japan later this fall, with TAMASHII NATIONS already developing official merchandise based on its new Mobile Suit variations.
Its first installment is scheduled to appear in the magazine’s December 2026 issue on October 23, expanding on Mobile Suit Gundam SEED FREEDOM and the upcoming Mobile Suit Gundam SEED FREEDOM ZERO with new variations of Mobile Suits connected to both productions.
Mechanical designs will be presented through setting artwork from Kunio Okawara and other artists, accompanied by machine profiles written by Studio Nue’s Shigeru Morita and physical model builds created by Hobby Japan’s contributors.
Image by Hobby JapanTAMASHII NATIONS has confirmed that merchandise based on SEED FREEDOM MSV is already in development, with the first related products currently being planned for GUNDAM-Con 2027 SIDE MAKUHARI in January.
No specific Mobile Suit or product line has been named yet, so it remains unclear whether the project will first appear through METAL ROBOT SPIRITS, ROBOT SPIRITS, METAL BUILD, or another part of the wider TAMASHII NATIONS catalog.
MSV stands for “Mobile Suit Variation,” a concept that has been part of Gundam since the early 1980s and was originally used to expand the One Year War with official Mobile Suit variants, specialist equipment, ace-pilot machines and designs created for roles that never appeared in the original anime.
The format allowed machines such as the Zaku II High Mobility Type and Zaku Desert Type to develop their own detailed histories outside the TV series, with many MSV designs later appearing in model kits, games, manga and premium figures.
Gundam SEED adopted the same idea almost from the beginning, with the original “Mobile Suit Gundam SEED MSV” running in Monthly Hobby Japan from its January 2003 through May 2004 issues.
That project expanded the Cosmic Era with Mobile Suits and equipment not seen in the main anime, combining new mechanical artwork, detailed background information, and custom model builds in a format designed to sit alongside the TV series.
Several of its machines went on to become well-known parts of Gundam SEED’s wider mechanical lineup, including Sword Calamity and the production-spec Raider, while Bandai also released Gunpla based on MSV designs such as the Ginn High Maneuver and CGUE Deep Arms.
The original run was followed by “SEED MSV Senki,” which used short stories and photographed model scenes to depict conflicts taking place away from the main anime, before Mobile Suit Gundam SEED DESTINY received its own “SEED DESTINY MSV” and “DESTINY MSV Senki” projects.
One of the better-known machines to emerge from the DESTINY-era project was Destiny Impulse Gundam, an experimental Impulse configuration that combined elements of the Force, Sword and Blast Silhouettes before ideas from the design fed into Destiny Gundam.
The return of Gundam SEED MSV comes while TAMASHII NATIONS is already expanding its Mobile Suit Gundam SEED FREEDOM lineup, including recent METAL ROBOT SPIRITS releases based on Athrun Zala’s Z’Gok and the Cavalier Aifrid support unit.
Bandai has also produced the “METAL ROBOT SPIRITS Destiny Gundam Spec II Final Battle Ver.” for TAMASHII NATION 2026, recreating Shinn Asuka’s Mobile Suit as it appears during the movie’s final battle.
Exactly which SEED FREEDOM MSV machines will receive the first new products has not been announced, with TAMASHII NATIONS currently asking fans to wait for further details.
More information on the merchandise project is expected ahead of the recently expanded GUNDAM-Con 2027 SIDE MAKUHARI, while the “Mobile Suit Gundam SEED FREEDOM MSV” serialization itself will officially begin in Monthly Hobby Japan on October 23.
