Gundam SEED Officially Returns January 2027 as FREEDOM ZERO Release Date and Trailer Revealed

Bandai Namco Filmworks has officially confirmed when “Mobile Suit Gundam SEED FREEDOM ZERO” will reach cinemas, setting the long-awaited prequel movie for a January 15, 2027 theatrical release in Japan.
The date was announced during the “GUNDAM Showcase 2026 @ NYC – Feat. SEED FREEDOM ZERO” panel at New York Comic Con 2026, where a new trailer and teaser visual centered on Shinn Asuka were also revealed.

“Mobile Suit Gundam SEED FREEDOM ZERO” bridges the period between Mobile Suit Gundam SEED DESTINY and 2024’s Mobile Suit Gundam SEED FREEDOM, filling in events that took place before Kira Yamato, Shinn, and their allies became involved with the Kingdom of Foundation.

The project was first announced in 2024 before Bandai Namco confirmed in May 2026 that it would be produced as a full theatrical movie, although no release date was given at the time.

Its story originates from a scenario created during the development of SEED FREEDOM by series writer Chiaki Morosawa, Shigeru Morita, and director Mitsuo Fukuda, giving the new film a direct production connection to the story eventually told in the 2024 movie.

SEED FREEDOM went on to become the highest-grossing theatrical release in Gundam history, earning more than ¥5 billion and attracting over three million admissions in Japan.

The newly released trailer places Shinn at the center of the prequel during C.E.74, after the collapse of Gilbert Durandal’s Destiny Plan and as preparations are underway to establish the international peacekeeping organization COMPASS.

Shinn is still struggling to find a new direction following the conclusion of the previous conflict when several Mobile Suits are transferred from ZAFT to COMPASS’ temporary base on Onogoro Island.

The situation escalates when the Strike Freedom Gundam is stolen during the night, forcing Shinn and the others back into combat as they attempt to recover the machine and prevent the incident from spreading further.

The teaser visual released alongside the date announcement similarly places Shinn at the forefront, reinforcing his position as the central protagonist of the new story.

Familiar characters including Kira Yamato, Athrun Zala, Lacus Clyne, Cagalli Yula Athha, Lunamaria Hawke and Agnes Giebenrath are also confirmed to return, while Leonard Balway will make his first animated appearance after previously appearing in the SEED FREEDOM bonus novel “Moonlight Valkyrie”.

The release date announcement follows Bandai Namco’s May confirmation that “Mobile Suit Gundam SEED FREEDOM ZERO” would receive a theatrical release, finally giving the project a firm place in the franchise’s 2027 schedule.

The wider Cosmic Era is also expanding through “Mobile Suit Gundam SEED FREEDOM MSV,” which begins serialization in Monthly Hobby Japan on October 23 with new Mobile Suit variations connected to SEED FREEDOM and FREEDOM ZERO.

Bandai also used the New York Comic Con panel to reveal a wider range of merchandise and releases tied to “Mobile Suit Gundam SEED FREEDOM ZERO”.
The “Mobile Suit Gundam SEED FREEDOM ZERO Original Soundtrack,” composed by Toshihiko Sahashi, will be released on CD alongside the movie on January 15, with a limited vinyl edition following in February.

Bandai also revealed the upcoming “HG 1/144 Infinite Justice Gundam & Booster Unit,” which recreates the FREEDOM ZERO version of Athrun’s Mobile Suit with a newly sculpted large booster and shield.

The “HG 1/144 Murasame Kai (Early Production Type)” will add another FREEDOM ZERO design to the High Grade Gunpla line when it launches in December 2026.

A new “HG 1/144 Gouf Ignited Custom” is also in development, turning the newly revealed Mobile Suit from the movie into a Gunpla kit scheduled for April 2027.

The completed figure line will receive the “METAL ROBOT SPIRITS

Another “METAL ROBOT SPIRITS” release will introduce the “Rising Freedom Gundam Radiance Grandeur” from “Mobile Suit Gundam SEED FREEDOM MSV,” with the completed model receiving an advance release at GUNDAM-Con 2027 SIDE MAKUHARI.

Bandai is also preparing the “Ichiban Kuji Mobile Suit Gundam SEED FREEDOM & FREEDOM ZERO,” which will introduce MASTERLISE figures of Shinn, Lunamaria, and other characters alongside Mobile Suit head magnets.

The “Mobile Suit Gundam SEED Series Grand Prix 2026” was announced alongside the movie news, allowing fans to vote on 287 memorable scenes connected to 55 characters from Gundam SEED, SEED DESTINY and SEED FREEDOM.

Advance Japanese movie tickets will go on sale from October 16 for ¥1,900 (approximately $12/£9), with the first physical ticket release including an A5 clear file featuring the newly revealed teaser visual while supplies last.
“Mobile Suit Gundam SEED FREEDOM ZERO” will open in Japanese cinemas on January 15, 2027, with a US release confirmed for February and a wider international theatrical release date yet to be announced.
