Tourist apprehended for upskirt voyeurism in Kyoto
A 30-year-old Taiwanese investor was arrested by police in Kyoto on the 4th of February on suspicion of attempted voyeurism.
The incident occurred at approximately 5:35 PM within a commercial facility in Shimogyo Ward, Kyoto City.
The suspect is accused of attempting to photograph the undergarments of a 22-year-old woman using a smartphone concealed within a bag.
The woman, riding an escalator, noticed the suspicious activity and immediately alerted those around her.
The suspect, attempting to flee the scene, was apprehended by the quick actions of male staff members within the facility.
The man, who was visiting Japan on vacation, is currently facing charges under the Act on the Punishment of Photographing Sexual Objects.
Criminal acts by visitors to Japan appear to be on the rise, with other incidents including assault, prostitution and shoplifting.
Many Japanese citizens have begun questioning whether measures currently in place to prevent potential criminals from entering the country are sufficient, with many asking the government to look at potential solutions to reduce the number of incidents.
