Kairakuen UME The Lights 2026

Last Updated on March 5, 2026

The Kairakuen Garden in Mito is preparing to host Kairakuen UME The Lights, a nocturnal event that will use modern technology to showcase the park’s famous plum blossoms.

Scheduled to take place during the peak of the spring bloom, the illumination will transform the historic landscape into an immersive environment using a combination of light, color, and sound.

Organizers have designed the experience around the philosophical concepts of yin and yang, a nod to the vision of the garden’s founder, Tokugawa Nariaki.

Visitors will be able to explore the bamboo forest where mist and projection mapping of classical waka poetry create a contemplative atmosphere.

The plum groves will be highlighted by layered lighting schemes that draw inspiration from the aesthetic traditions of the imperial court.

The project aims to encourage movement through the grounds, featuring specific installations that integrate elements of contemporary Japanese pop culture with traditional storytelling.

In addition to the visual displays, the event will host various food and drink stalls serving regional specialties such as local sake and plum wine.

Those planning to attend can access the garden via a twenty minute bus ride from the North Exit of Mito Station.

The combination of seasonal blossoms and artistic lighting is expected to offer a unique perspective on one of Japan’s most celebrated historical sites after sunset.
