The Girl Who Leapt Through Time 4K 20th Anniversary Screenings Announced for Japan

The Girl Who Leapt Through Time is set to celebrate its 20th anniversary with a return to Japanese theaters, including a first-ever 4K screening in the country.

The classic anime film originally debuted in Japan on July 15, 2006, and became a significant success after expanding from six theaters to over 100 via positive word of mouth.

The Girl Who Leapt Through Time

This milestone marks the first original project from director Mamoru Hosoda following his departure from Toei Animation and served as the foundation for his later work on Summer Wars.

In conjunction with the theatrical revival, a special exhibition titled The Creative Origins of Mamoru Hosoda will showcase production materials from his first three original films, including The Girl Who Leapt Through Time, Summer Wars, and Wolf Children.

The exhibition aims to provide a deep dive into the director’s creative process and what drives his unique storytelling style.

Fans can attend the 4K revival screenings this summer at Shinjuku Piccadilly and various other theaters throughout Japan.

The Creative Origins of Mamoru Hosoda Exhibition will first open at the CREATIVE MUSEUM TOKYO from June 20, 2026, through August 31, 2026.

Following the Tokyo run, the event will move to Grand Front Osaka from October 28, 2026, to January 4, 2027.

The exhibition tour will conclude at the Fukuoka Art Museum, where it will be held from January 22, 2027, until March 28, 2027.

Information regarding ticket sales for both the theatrical screenings and the museum exhibition will be announced at a later date.
