Square Enix has officially announced a new Final Fantasy board game starring its popular Chocobos, with pre-orders now open for the competitive tabletop adventure that features characters and monsters from throughout the series.

The new “Chocobo’s Scout Frenzy Board Game” challenges players to outsmart their opponents while searching for Gysahl Greens, using a combination of numbered cards, special abilities, and strategic decisions to claim victory.

Chocobos first appeared in Final Fantasy II in 1988 and have since become one of the franchise’s most recognizable mascots, traditionally serving as mounts that help players travel across the enormous worlds featured throughout the RPG series.

Their popularity has also led to several standalone video games, including the Chocobo’s Mystery Dungeon series and the kart racing spin-off Chocobo GP, alongside appearances in numerous official merchandise collections.

Square Enix has designed the new board game for two to five players, with individual matches lasting approximately 30 minutes.

The game follows a group of colorful Chocobos venturing out to gather Gysahl Greens, although their expedition is complicated by dangerous monsters and rival adventurers competing for the same rewards.

Each round, players secretly select a numbered Chocobo card from their hand in an attempt to claim one of the score cards available on the field.

Once everyone has made their selection, the cards are revealed, with the highest numbers determining which players receive priority when choosing their rewards.

However, not every card provides a benefit, as players must balance the opportunity to collect valuable items against the risk of accumulating negative points.

Gysahl Greens contribute positive points to a player’s total, whereas encounters with Final Fantasy enemies such as Goblins and Iron Giants can result in penalties.

Special Dice Cards, Companion Cards featuring characters such as Shiroma and Moogles, and Bomb Cards introduce additional effects that can provide bonuses or disadvantages depending on the situation.

Players must therefore consider which rewards their opponents might be targeting and anticipate the numbered cards they could be holding, with victory awarded to whoever finishes the game with the highest score.

Inside the box, players will find 100 Chocobo Cards, 50 Exploration Cards, 15 Command Coins and two High/Low markers.

Square Enix is also including four separate instruction manuals in Japanese, English, French, and German, allowing international fans to play the Japanese edition without needing to translate its rules.

This isn’t Square Enix’s only recent venture into tabletop gaming, with the publisher previously revealing a new Final Fantasy VII board game in April 2026, challenging players to work together to construct and climb Shinra’s headquarters without causing the structure to collapse.

Another officially licensed tabletop project, Origins of Light: A Final Fantasy Board Game, was also unveiled earlier this year, adapting the first three Final Fantasy games into an adventure featuring classic enemies, character jobs, and locations.

Chocobo fans have also received several merchandise announcements during 2026, including a new Nendoroid figure from Good Smile Company, which was revealed during February’s Nendoroid FUNS presentation.

“Chocobo’s Scout Frenzy Board Game” is scheduled for release in Japan on March 27, 2027, with a retail price of ¥4,400 (approximately $28 / £21).

Pre-orders opened on October 15, 2026, through the official Square Enix e-STORE, with Japanese hobby retailers such as HobbyLink Japan also listing the game.

Although the inclusion of English and other European-language manuals makes the game accessible to international players, Square Enix has not yet confirmed separate North American or European release dates.
