Final Fantasy is heading back to its earliest adventures with Origins of Light: A Final Fantasy Board Game, an officially licensed tabletop game that was recently previewed at Gen Con 2026 ahead of its Kickstarter launch this October.

Developed by KessCo in partnership with Square Enix, the game combines elements from Final Fantasy I, Final Fantasy II and Final Fantasy III, using artwork and ideas inspired by the modern Pixel Remaster versions of the classic RPGs.

The first three numbered Final Fantasy games established many of the features that would become synonymous with the franchise, from crystals and character jobs to world exploration, magic and battles against increasingly powerful monsters.

Origins of Light aims to translate those ideas into a tabletop format for one to four players, with players developing their characters, collecting equipment and spells, exploring familiar locations and facing enemies and bosses drawn from the original games.

Its presentation closely follows the Pixel Remaster aesthetic, using colorful pixel artwork for characters, monsters and locations instead of replacing the games’ retro appearance with a completely new visual style.

KessCo originally announced the project earlier in 2026 under the working title Final Fantasy: The Board Game, before revealing Origins of Light as its final name and moving the release toward a Kickstarter campaign.

Fans received their clearest look at the project during Gen Con 2026 in Indianapolis, where KessCo presented a playable prototype covering material from all three featured games.

The preview showed large maps, character and enemy cards, equipment, quest elements and numerous tokens, alongside crystal-shaped dice and small Chocobo pieces that bring some of Final Fantasy’s most recognizable imagery into the physical components.

The prototype also demonstrated how familiar Final Fantasy jobs are being adapted for tabletop play, with different abilities reflecting roles such as Fighter, Monk, White Mage, Black Mage and Dragoon.

As the version shown at Gen Con remains a work in progress, individual rules, components and artwork may still change before the final game enters production.

KessCo has not yet announced the final box contents, Kickstarter pledge options, pricing or fulfillment schedule, with those details expected to become clearer when the crowdfunding campaign goes live.
