Square Enix Announces First-Ever HD-2D Final Fantasy Game

Square Enix used its June 2026 Nintendo Direct presentation to introduce Final Fantasy Resonance, a new turn-based role-playing game set within the Final Fantasy universe.
The title represents the first game in the long-running series to adopt the company’s HD-2D visual style, blending pixel-art characters with modern lighting effects, depth, and fully realized three-dimensional environments.

Final Fantasy Resonance draws its foundation from the story of the now-discontinued mobile game Final Fantasy: Brave Exvius, specifically adapting the narrative from its first season.

However, the project is neither a remake nor a direct conversion of the mobile release, as it also incorporates story elements from later Brave Exvius updates alongside entirely new content created specifically for this version.

The adventure follows Rain, a respected knight of the Kingdom of Grandshelt whose father serves as the realm’s king.

Rain embarks on a classic Final Fantasy-style journey to safeguard the world’s magical crystals and prevent catastrophe.
Joining him are several key companions, including his trusted ally Lasswell, the gifted engineer Lid who follows in Cid’s footsteps, and Fina, a summoner suffering from memory loss.

Players will travel across multiple continents using a newly designed overworld that serves as a central part of the experience.
Series staples such as Chocobos and airships will also be available during the adventure.

Exploration extends beyond the main storyline through optional dungeons that reward players with Espers for Fina to summon during battles.

Additional Visions can be discovered at special shrines, where story sequences revisit memorable moments from across Final Fantasy history.

Combat has been completely redesigned for this release and utilizes a traditional turn-order system rather than the Active Time Battle mechanics featured in many earlier Final Fantasy titles.

One of the game’s defining systems revolves around collectible Visions, which function similarly to a Job system by being equipped to party members.
These Visions provide additional abilities and grow stronger independently through continued use.

While some Visions are exclusive to Final Fantasy Resonance, a major attraction is the inclusion of guest characters drawn from other entries in the franchise.
Confirmed guest Visions currently include the Warrior of Light from Final Fantasy I, Terra from Final Fantasy VI, Cloud from Final Fantasy VII, Zidane from Final Fantasy IX, Shantotto from Final Fantasy XI, and Y’shtola from Final Fantasy XIV.

The soundtrack combines music originally featured in Brave Exvius with 33 newly composed tracks created specifically for Final Fantasy Resonance.
Final Fantasy Resonance is scheduled to launch on PlayStation, Xbox, PC, Nintendo Switch, and Nintendo Switch 2 on October 22, 2026, although pricing information has not yet been announced.
