Sega Creates Life-Size Sonic Statue Using Real DNA for 35th Anniversary

Sega has revealed an unusual new project created to commemorate the 35th anniversary of the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise, combining character design, science, and contemporary art into a one-of-a-kind display piece.
The centerpiece of the celebration is a life-size creation known as the “SONIC THE HEDGEHOG DNA FIGURE,” a special exhibit designed around the idea of translating Sonic’s defining characteristics into a conceptual genetic blueprint.

First introduced in 1991, Sonic the Hedgehog has become one of gaming’s most recognizable mascots, known worldwide for his incredible speed, adventurous spirit, and distinctive blue appearance.
Over the past three and a half decades, Sonic has appeared in numerous video games, animated productions, films, comics, and merchandise, establishing himself as one of Sega’s most enduring icons.

The concept behind the “SONIC THE HEDGEHOG DNA FIGURE” reimagines Sonic’s personality traits and signature abilities as though they were encoded within a biological DNA sequence.
Among the traits incorporated into this fictional genetic design are Sonic’s blue coloration, his ability to run at supersonic speeds, his cool and free-spirited attitude, his love of adventure, his signature spinning attack, and even his well-known inability to swim.

Using these defining attributes as inspiration, a custom DNA sequence representing Sonic’s identity was designed and synthesized before being incorporated directly into the figure itself.
Rather than serving as a simple statue, the project aims to represent Sonic both physically and conceptually by combining sculptural design with a symbolic genetic component.

At the center of the display, the synthesized DNA is housed within a Chaos Emerald-inspired element positioned near Sonic’s chest, creating the illusion that it is floating within the figure.
The result is intended to present what the creators describe as the core essence of Sonic through both visual artistry and scientific interpretation.

The project was developed by LOM BABY, a science-focused creative collective made up of artists, engineers, and researchers whose work explores themes surrounding the origins and creation of life.
LOM BABY previously gained attention for unveiling what was described as the world’s first DNA-based figure during Expo 2025 Osaka Kansai.

The group also collaborated with Capcom in early 2026 on a project that recreated a non-pathogenic and inactive version of the fictional t-Virus from the Resident Evil franchise using DNA synthesis technology.
Alongside the “SONIC THE HEDGEHOG DNA FIGURE” itself, visitors will be able to view informational displays explaining the design process behind Sonic’s conceptual DNA blueprint.

The exhibition will also feature a dedicated concept film that combines live-action footage and computer-generated imagery to illustrate the development and creative vision behind the project.
The “SONIC THE HEDGEHOG DNA FIGURE” will be showcased for a limited time beginning June 23, 2026, at SEGA STORE TOKYO on the sixth floor of Shibuya PARCO in Japan, where visitors can experience both the figure and its accompanying exhibition materials.
