River City Saga: Journey To The West Story, Systems, and Characters Revealed
Publisher Arc System Works and developer UnitePlus have launched the official website for River City Saga: Journey to the West, offering a first look at the game’s story and mechanics.
The upcoming title reimagines the classic Chinese novel Journey to the West by casting Kunio and other familiar faces from the River City series as legendary figures.
Players will follow the journey of Sun Wukong, who is played by Kunio, as he is freed from a 500 year seal by the monk Tang Sanzang to embark on a pilgrimage to Tianzhu.
The party also includes the cheerful Zhu Bajie and the serious Sha Wujing, both of whom are also portrayed by Kunio in this comedic action adventure.
The gameplay features a blood-pumping brawl action system where players can use intuitive controls to chain combos and execute flashy attacks against waves of demons.
A roguelike progression system ensures that every run is different, with changing layouts, enemies, and skills that allow characters to grow stronger even after a defeat.
The skill enhancement system allows for deep customization, enabling players to boost stats and combine equipment to create their own specialized fighting styles.
Formidable bosses with unique attack patterns and gimmicks stand in the way of the group’s quest to retrieve sacred scriptures.
The cast includes other River City staples such as Goda as Erlang Shen, Riki as Nezha, and Misuzu as the Buddha.
River City Saga: Journey to the West is scheduled to release for PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch, and PC via Steam in 2026.
