Konami has announced that Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater will feature an original online battle mode called “Fox Hunt.”

This was announced during Konami’s “Press Start” broadcast today, offering initial insights into the new multiplayer experience accompanying the upcoming remake.

Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater is a ground-up remake of Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater, originally released on PlayStation 2 in 2004.

The game is celebrated for its intricate stealth gameplay and innovative survival mechanics in a jungle environment.

The upcoming remake is expected to be popular, with figures of Naked Snake and The Boss and Revolver Ocelot already announced by action figure manufacturer Kaiyodo.

The franchise itself, created by Hideo Kojima, is known for its cinematic storytelling and pioneering stealth action.

While previous Metal Gear Solid titles have included online components (like Metal Gear Online), “Fox Hunt” is being presented as a distinct new direction.

According to Yu Sahara, the mode director for “Fox Hunt,” this new online battle mode will offer a gameplay experience “completely different” from the main story, despite sharing the same worldview as Metal Gear Solid Delta.

Sahara addressed potential comparisons to the earlier Metal Gear Online, emphasizing that “Fox Hunt” is a distinct entity.

The new online mode is said to differ to previous similar entries in the Metal Gear series, such as Metal Gear Online

Sahara explained that the creation of “Fox Hunt” stemmed from player requests for a return of online Metal Gear battles, while also considering the evolution of the gaming environment.

The mode’s concept is built around the core tenets of the Metal Gear series’ stealth—particularly the camouflage mechanics prominent in Snake Eater’s main story—and the theme of survival central to the game.

“Not only focusing on simply shooting at each other, but taking advantage of ‘hide and seek’ and ‘discovering’—building a concept of ‘online battles unique to Metal Gear’ was a new challenge,” Sahara stated.

Specific gameplay details for “Fox Hunt” were not disclosed during the broadcast, but Sahara assured that development is progressing diligently and more information will be shared as it becomes available.

In addition to the “Fox Hunt” announcement, Konami confirmed platform-exclusive minigames for Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater:

  • The PlayStation 5 and PC versions will include the “Snake vs. Monkey” minigame, featuring characters from Sony’s Ape Escape series. This minigame was a bonus feature in the original Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater on PS2.
