Komi Can’t Communicate Returns With New College-Era Bonus Chapter
An unexpected new chapter of Komi Can’t Communicate has been released as part of the manga’s 10th anniversary celebrations.
A brand-new story was released on June 17, bringing readers back into the world of Shoko Komi and her friends after the conclusion of the original series.
Created by Tomohito Oda, Komi Can’t Communicate completed its main serialization in January 2025 after running for approximately nine years and building a dedicated global fanbase.
The series also inspired two anime seasons and became widely known for its blend of comedy, romance, and heartfelt character development.
The story follows Shoko Komi, a student admired by her classmates for her beauty and elegance, who secretly struggles with extreme social anxiety and difficulty communicating with others.
With the support of Hitohito Tadano and an ever-growing circle of friends, Komi gradually works toward her goal of making one hundred friends while learning to express herself more confidently.
The newly released anniversary chapter shifts the focus back to Komi’s life following high school graduation, moving the story into her university years.
This latest installment serves as a continuation of Chapter 500, titled “I’m a College Student,” which originally appeared as a special bonus chapter included with the manga’s final Volume 37.
Chapter 501 opens with Komi beginning a new stage of her life through a shared living arrangement while continuing to spend time with Tadano and the rest of the familiar cast.
The chapter explores the everyday experiences and challenges that come with college life while maintaining the series’ trademark blend of humor and character-driven storytelling.
Tomohito Oda revealed that he reread the entire manga from beginning to end while preparing the new chapter.
According to Oda, revisiting the series left him with a renewed appreciation for the work, describing it as genuinely enjoyable after viewing it again with fresh eyes.
The creator also admitted that he often felt uncertain about the series during its original publication run but came away from his reread feeling reassured about the final result.
Discussing the new chapter, Oda explained that he put considerable effort into ensuring the content lived up to the standard established by previous installments and joked that readers would ultimately decide whether he succeeded.
At present, there has been no official announcement regarding whether the college storyline will continue as a full serialization or remain a standalone anniversary project.
The bonus chapter featuring the college-era story is available now through Sunday Webry as part of the manga’s 10th anniversary celebrations, while official channels have also hinted that additional commemorative projects are still to come.
Many fans have already expressed hopes that the renewed attention surrounding the franchise could eventually lead to a long-awaited third anime season announcement.
