Himouto! Umaru-chan Officially Returns After 8 Years with Brand-New Manga Special
Himouto! Umaru-chan has made an unexpected comeback with its first original manga story in around eight years.
Creator Sankaku Head has reunited readers with Umaru Doma for the 16-page special one-shot “Himouto! Umaru-chan 100,” revisiting the comedy built around her dramatically different personalities at school and at home.
Umaru appears to everyone outside her home as a talented, attractive, and dependable high school student, but immediately abandons that image after returning to the apartment she shares with her older brother Taihei.
Her much smaller at-home form instead spends its time gaming, watching anime, eating snacks, and generally avoiding responsibility, creating the contrast that became one of the defining jokes of the series.
Sankaku Head originally launched Himouto! Umaru-chan in Weekly Young Jump in 2013, with the main manga running until 2017 and eventually reaching 12 collected volumes.
Its follow-up, “Himouto! Umaru-chan G,” continued into 2018 and was the last regular manga continuation before the newly released special.
Across the main series and its related manga, Himouto! Umaru-chan has surpassed 3 million copies in circulation and also received two television anime seasons in 2015 and 2017.
The new one-shot shows that Umaru’s lazy home life hasn’t changed much during her years away, although one accident now threatens to expose that side of her on a much larger scale.
After her “himouto” behavior is accidentally broadcast and spreads rapidly across social media, Umaru suddenly finds her secret lifestyle becoming an online phenomenon.
The situation escalates when one million younger sisters around the country begin embracing the same laid-back habits, turning what was once Umaru’s private double life into a much wider craze.
The “100” in the chapter’s title ties into Shueisha’s 100th anniversary celebrations, which are also being supported by a million page digital manga giveaway and a series of collaborations with Japanese fashion retailer Uniqlo.
All 12 volumes of the original Himouto! Umaru-chan manga and the single collected volume of Himouto! Umaru-chan G are currently being sold digitally for ¥100 each (approximately $0.64 / £0.48) through participating Japanese ebook stores.
The complete original series can therefore be picked up for ¥1,200 before adding Himouto! Umaru-chan G, and the first three volumes are temporarily available to read for free through Young Jump’s digital services.
Both anniversary offers will remain available until October 10, giving returning readers and newcomers a limited opportunity to revisit the series alongside the special chapter.
