Higurashi Celebrates 20th Anniversary with New Anime Announcement

A brand-new television anime project based on the long-running Higurashi franchise has officially been announced.
At present, the confirmed production staff consists of original creators Ryukishi07 and 07th Expansion providing the source material, with Studio DEEN, the same animation studio responsible for bringing the original television anime to audiences two decades ago, handling animation production.

A newly unveiled key visual showcases a smiling Rena alongside the phrase “Welcome Home, Everyone,” a message that appears designed to celebrate both the series’ legacy and the return of familiar faces.

The reveal was made during a special June 21, 2026 broadcast held in celebration of Watanagashi Day, a date that holds particular significance for fans of the series.
Higurashi: When They Cry began as a visual novel series before expanding into manga, anime, novels, and numerous other adaptations.

Set in the seemingly peaceful rural village of Hinamizawa, the story follows Keiichi Maebara and his friends as they become entangled in a series of increasingly disturbing mysteries, tragic events, and repeating timelines.

Over the years, the franchise has earned a dedicated international following thanks to its blend of psychological horror, suspense, mystery, and emotional character drama.

The newly announced Higurashi anime will see several familiar performers returning to their iconic roles from previous adaptations.
Soichiro Hoshi has been confirmed to reprise the role of Keiichi Maebara and Mai Nakahara will once again voice Rena Ryugu.
Satsuki Yukino returns to portray both Mion Sonozaki and Shion Sonozaki whilst Mika Kanai has been confirmed to return as Satoko Hojo.
Finally, Yukari Tamura will once again voice Rika Furude.
The newly released promotional video also features newly recorded dialogue from Rena, offering fans an early glimpse at the upcoming project.
In addition to the anime announcement, a special logo commemorating the television anime’s 20th anniversary has also been revealed.

The anniversary emblem incorporates the imagery of a tear-off calendar to symbolize the passage of two decades, while also featuring Rena’s iconic hatchet as a central design element.
No release date has been confirmed for the new Higurashi anime, however further details are expected to be revealed in the near future.
