Good Smile Reveals First Look at Hatsune Miku’s New Great Wave-Inspired Hokusai Collab Nendoroid
Image by Charlotte DavisHatsune Miku’s collaboration with legendary ukiyo-e artist Katsushika Hokusai is getting a new Nendoroid, with Good Smile Company revealing the first painted look at a figure inspired by The Great Wave off Kanagawa.
The “Nendoroid Hatsune Miku KATSUSHIKA HOKUSAI Collaboration Ver. (Rella)” recreates an original Miku design by illustrator Rella that blends her familiar appearance with elements taken directly from one of Hokusai’s most famous works.
The Great Wave plays a major role in the design, with the shape, movement, and white foam of Hokusai’s waves worked into Miku’s long twin-tails and outfit rather than simply appearing as artwork behind her.
Deep blues, turquoise, and white continue across the figure, helping connect Miku’s usual colors with the palette of the original woodblock print while keeping the figure immediately recognizable as her.
Good Smile’s painted prototype also shows how the wave-inspired sections have been translated into the smaller Nendoroid format, with detailed sculpting across the hair and clothing used to preserve much of Rella’s original artwork.
The figure comes from the “Katsushika Hokusai x Hatsune Miku Rella” project launched in July 2026, which brought Rella into the wider collaboration between Miku and Hokusai’s work.
Rella created new artwork inspired by four pieces from Hokusai’s Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji series, including The Great Wave off Kanagawa and Fine Wind, Clear Morning, with the designs also extending to Rin, Len, Luka, MEIKO and KAITO across the wider Piapro Characters lineup.
This followed an earlier phase of the Hokusai x Hatsune Miku project featuring artwork by iXima, which was used across merchandise including canvas art, T-shirts, pouches, postcards and other goods released during 2026.
Rella is already closely connected to several major Hatsune Miku projects, having previously created artwork for the Hatsune Miku Symphony series, Miku’s 16th anniversary celebrations, and the “Beauty Looking Back Miku” cultural heritage project, which was also turned into a Nendoroid.
The new Nendoroid was first shown as an unpainted prototype at Magical Mirai 2026 Tokyo in late August, where Good Smile Company revealed a large wave of upcoming Hatsune Miku and virtual singer figures.
September has already seen several more Miku figure announcements, including Good Smile opening pre-orders for its new Hatsune Miku V6 Nendoroid based on LAM’s updated software artwork.
Kaiyodo has also revealed two very different Miku releases this month, including its elaborate 1/7 scale Goldfish Ver. statue and a Revoltech figure based on the infamous Shiteyanyo internet meme.
The wider Hokusai x Miku project will also feature at the Printing Museum in Tokyo through the “Polaris: Icons and Artists Across Time” exhibition, which opens on September 19 and runs until January 11, 2027.
The exhibition will display Rella’s newly created Hokusai x Piapro Characters artwork alongside reproductions of the original Hokusai prints, while also exploring the similarities between traditional multi-layer woodblock printing and modern digital illustration.
Visitors will also be able to try a layered stamp activity based on The Great Wave off Kanagawa x Hatsune Miku artwork, with collaboration merchandise and reproduction prints available alongside the exhibition.
Pre-orders for the “Hatsune Miku KATSUSHIKA HOKUSAI Collaboration Ver. (Rella) Nendoroid” are scheduled to open on September 18, 2026.
Good Smile Company has not yet announced the figure’s price, included accessories or release date, with the full product details expected when pre-orders begin.
