Nintendo Museum exclusive merchandise revealed

Nintendo Museum Shop

The Nintendo Museum opened in Kyoto on October the 2nd and features exhibitions covering Nintendo’s history and hardware – but the best part may be its “BONUS STAGE” shop which is packed with a huge selection of Nintendo themed merchandise.

The product range on sale includes unusual items such as gigantic controller shaped cushions along side the typical product range of notebooks, mugs and shirts usually found in museum shops.

BONUS STAGE features merchandise based on 15 of Nintendo’s consoles including:

  • Family Computer (Famicom)
  • Nintendo Entertainment System (NES)
  • Disk System
  • Game Boy
  • Super Famicom
  • Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES)
  • Virtual Boy
  • N64
  • Game Boy Advance
  • GameCube
  • Nintendo DS
  • Wii
  • Nintendo 3DS
  • Wii U
  • Nintendo Switch

While not the most practical purchases for overseas visitors with limited luggage space to bring items back home, the giant controller-shaped cushions based on the Famicom, Super Famicom, N64, and Wii are expected to be popular purchases.

The range of console and controller themed merchandise available at BONUS STAGE includes spiral notebooks and ballpoint pens as well as high quality mugs.

Similar to the goods available in the Nintendo stores located in Japanese cities such as Kyoto and Tokyo, a wide variety of other items such as pin badges, hanafuda cards, keyrings, stickers and cookie tins are also available to purchase.

As the Nintendo Museum expects there to be high demand for many of the exclusive items available in BONUS STAGE, there are limits on the quantities of each item that individual visitors can purchase.

Some items at the Nintendo Museum are limited to one per person. The items that are limited are as follows:

One item per person

  • Hardware Keychain Collection (six types) 1983 – 1999
  • Hardware Keychain Collection (seven types) 2000 – 2017
  • Hanafuda Playing Cards: Houou – Hyakunin Isshu
  • Nintendo Museum neck strap and card holder
  • Green Pipe Super Mario cookies
  • Nintendo Museum cookies
  • Cushions (four types): Famicom controller, Super Famicom controller, Nintendo 64 controller, Wii Remote

Up to eight items or one box per person

  • Nintendo Magnet Collection (eight types)

The limitations are to allow all visitors a chance to purchase products, but they are also likely being implemented to avoid the scenarios often encountered in Nintendo’s popular Pokémon Center stores where individuals purchase large quantities of exclusive or limited quantity products with the intention of re-selling them online, leaving the store without enough stock for other visitors.
