Evangelion Unveils Massive New $700 Mari Makinami Model Kit
Volks has officially revealed a new 1/4 scale resin model kit of Evangelion’s Mari Makinami Illustrious, recreating the Rebuild of Evangelion pilot in one of the largest additions to its Absolute Zone range.
The “Absolute Zone 1/4 Mari Makinami Illustrious” depicts Mari in her familiar pink plugsuit with red glasses, flowing twin tails, and a huge sniper rifle resting against her shoulder.
Mari made her debut in Evangelion: 2.0 You Can (Not) Advance and went on to pilot several Evangelion units across the Rebuild movies, including Provisional Unit-05, Unit-02, and different versions of Unit-08.
Volks designed the kit’s composition with inspiration from traditional Japanese ikebana, carefully positioning Mari, her weapon, and the surrounding elements to create a balanced display when viewed from different angles.
Once assembled, the model measures a massive 79.5cm high, 31cm wide, and 38cm deep.
Mari receives a slightly more realistic interpretation than many anime figures, with acrylic eyes adding depth to her expression and translucent resin used through sections of her flowing brown hair.
Her plugsuit retains its familiar pink, white, and dark blue color scheme, while the completed promotional example uses glossy, metallic, and pearlescent finishes across different sections of the suit.
A large sniper rifle completes the pose with its scope and wrapped strap, while the rubble-covered base incorporates the open-mouthed head of Evangelion Unit-08γ beneath Mari’s feet.
Fans should note that the finished example shown in the promotional images represents a professionally completed build, but the actual product is supplied as an unpainted 71-part resin model kit molded in four colors.
Mari’s reveal follows several recent Evangelion figure announcements, including F and Yoshitoku’s 1/4 scale Rei Ayanami and Asuka Shikinami Langley Japanese Doll figures, which combine large-scale sculpting with genuine kimono-style clothing as part of the series’ 30th anniversary celebrations.
Good Smile Company also opened pre-orders in August for its huge new “MODEROID DX-SCALE Evangelion Unit-01,” which launches a larger branch of the company’s model kit range with Standard and Luminous Set editions.
Advance orders for the “Absolute Zone 1/4 Mari Makinami Illustrious” will first be accepted at Hobby Round 35 in Tokyo on November 7, before general reservations open through Volks stores and its Japanese online shop from November 21 through January 31, 2027.
The made-to-order resin model kit is priced at ¥115,000 (approximately $724 / £548), with delivery currently scheduled for spring 2027.
