Evangelion’s Unit-01 Gets a Massive New Model Kit from Good Smile Company
Good Smile Company has officially opened pre-orders for a massive new Evangelion model kit that will launch its new “MODEROID DX-SCALE” sub-line.
The first MODEROID DX-SCALE release is based on Evangelion Unit-01 from Rebuild of Evangelion and will be available as both a “Standard Edition” and an upgraded “Luminous Set Edition”.
Piloted by Shinji Ikari, Unit-01 serves as one of NERV’s primary Evangelions throughout the Rebuild movies and remains the machine most closely associated with the franchise, particularly through its violent Berserk appearances and instantly recognizable purple and green armor.
DX-SCALE has been created as a larger and more detailed branch of Good Smile Company’s MODEROID model kit range, placing additional emphasis on size, color separation and sculpted detail.
Rather than simply enlarging the MODEROID Evangelion Unit-01 released in 2023, the new kit reinterprets the more muscular and sharply defined Unit-01 statue created for Shin Japan Heroes Universe, with KLAMP STUDIO responsible for the sculpt.
The finished model stands approximately 26 cm tall, making it considerably larger than the earlier 16.5 cm MODEROID release while retaining full articulation throughout the body and limbs.
Multi-colored runners, clear parts, pre-painted components and water-slide decals are used to reproduce Unit-01’s familiar appearance without requiring a complete paint job, while sections of the green armor react to blacklight to create a fluorescent glow.
Good Smile has also included an opening jaw, allowing the model to recreate Unit-01’s more animalistic expressions and the roaring appearance associated with its Berserk state.
Its articulation has been designed around the unusually human movement of an Evangelion rather than a conventional robot, allowing poses based around running, jumping, kneeling and aggressive close-range combat.
The “Standard Edition” comes with the Spear of Cassius, Pallet Rifle and Progressive Knife, together with interchangeable hands designed specifically to hold each weapon more naturally.
The “Luminous Set Edition” keeps all of those features but adds two freestanding blacklight units and a separate illuminated head designed to make much greater use of the fluorescent armor.
Both blacklight units stand approximately 26 cm tall to match Unit-01 itself, allowing the front of the model to be illuminated evenly rather than relying on a smaller external light source.
The additional head contains an internal LED system that lights both eyes, with the effect switched on and off by bringing the included magnetic switch unit close to the head.
The illuminated head still retains the opening-mouth mechanism, although the lighting setup requires six AA batteries and two LR41 button batteries that are sold separately.
The “Standard Edition” is priced at ¥9,800 (approx. $62 USD / £45 GBP), while the “Luminous Set Edition” is priced at ¥12,800 (approx. $81 USD / £59 GBP), with pre-orders now open via reputable hobby goods retailers such as HobbyLink Japan.
Both versions of the MODEROID DX-SCALE Evangelion Unit-01 are scheduled for release in June 2027.
