Evangelion Reveals First Look at New EVA-01 x Godzilla Collab Model Kit
Image by Charlotte DavisOne of the wildest designs created for the Godzilla x Evangelion crossover is becoming a new plastic model kit, with X-Plus recreating the Evangelion Unit-01’s monstrous “G Awakening Form”.
The upcoming “X-PLUS MODEL KIT: EVANGELION Unit-01 G-Awakening Form” uses a fixed, non-articulated pose to show Unit-01 midway through its transformation, combining the EVA’s familiar purple and green armor with rough organic skin, a distorted body, and enormous Godzilla-like dorsal fins.
Godzilla x Evangelion began as an official crossover project in 2016, following Evangelion creator Hideaki Anno’s work as director and screenwriter on Shin Godzilla.
The project has brought the two franchises together through figures, artwork, games, merchandise, and other special releases built around the idea of Godzilla and Evangelion sharing the same world.
The Unit-01 “G Awakening Form” grew out of one of the project’s most extreme concepts which asked “what would happen if an Evangelion became infected with Godzilla’s G-Cells?”.
Within Godzilla lore, G-Cells are highly invasive cells taken from Godzilla that can alter other living organisms, with similar concepts previously playing a role in the creation of monsters including Biollante and SpaceGodzilla.
The transformation was later featured prominently in “P Godzilla vs. Evangelion: G-Cell Awakening,” a Japan-only pachinko game released in 2022 that uses CG sequences to tell an original crossover story involving characters and creatures from both franchises.
In that story, Unit-01 is hit by Godzilla’s atomic breath before the invading G-Cells begin changing its body, eventually producing the grotesque hybrid recreated by the new X-Plus kit.
X-Plus has emphasized that transformation through an aggressive crouched stance, with Unit-01 leaning heavily forward and its mouth opened into a huge roar that gives the normally humanoid EVA a far more animalistic appearance.
Large sections of its recognizable restraint armor remain visible across the body, but much of the exposed surface has changed into rough, heavily textured flesh as the Godzilla-like mutation spreads through the EVA.
The transformation becomes even more obvious across its back, where a row of huge dorsal fins erupts from the body while retaining bright green coloring that connects them back to Unit-01’s familiar appearance.
Because the model uses a fixed pose rather than articulated joints, X-Plus has been able to keep the distorted body, skin textures, and overlapping armor sections relatively uninterrupted across the sculpt.
For fans who prefer to create their own scenes amongst their collection, Bandai has also developed an articulated S.H.MonsterArts version of the G-Awakening Unit-01 with input from X-Plus.
That figure is built around poseability and includes extras such as an Atomic Breath effect and alternate parts, while the new X-Plus release instead focuses on reproducing a single dramatic scene as a plastic model that fans assemble themselves.
X-Plus has also used the design several times within its own figure ranges, including standard and Metallic Color versions of the deformed DEFOREAL G-Awakening Form, showing how the once relatively obscure crossover design has continued to gain new releases years after its debut.
X-Plus hasn’t yet revealed the price, finished dimensions, or full specifications for the “X-PLUS MODEL KIT: EVANGELION Unit-01 G-Awakening Form”, with further details expected before pre-orders open.
The kit is currently scheduled for release in December 2026.
