The first-ever Chiikawa movie is set to hit screens in 2026
The immensely popular character franchise Chiikawa is officially heading to the big screen for its first feature-length film.
The project is titled “Chiikawa the Movie: Secret of the Mermaid Island” (Eiga Chiikawa: Ningyo no Shima no Himitsu).
It is based on the long-running “Siren Arc” (also known as the Island Arc), which was originally serialized on X by creator Nagano from March to November 2023.
Chiikawa is a massive character franchise known for its unique blend of adorable visuals and surprisingly dark, surreal, or realistic storytelling.
The animation production for this new film will be handled by CygamesPictures.
The studio is renowned for its high-quality animation, particularly the intense action scenes seen in the recent film Uma Musume: Pretty Derby – Beginning of a New Era.
The film will be fully supervised by Nagano to ensure the world is captured correctly with magnificent music and powerful visuals.
A new key visual reveals Chiikawa, Hachiware, and Usagi riding a boat under a beautiful full moon, dressed in flower crowns and grass skirts.
The story begins when Usagi appears with a flyer stuck to their face, inviting the group to a “Special Island.”
Lured by the promise of “100 times the reward for easy subjugation missions” and “practically free limited-edition island ramen and sweets,” the trio decides to join an island training camp.
They are joined by the suspicious Rakko-sensei as they board the ship toward the unknown.
“Chiikawa the Movie: Secret of the Mermaid Island” is scheduled to be released in Summer 2026 and will be distributed by Toho.
