Super Mario Galaxy movie announced for 2026 release

A new film based on the Super Mario franchise has been officially announced, this time adapting the world of the beloved game, Super Mario Galaxy.
The new movie was revealed by Mario’s creator, Shigeru Miyamoto, during a “Nintendo Direct” presentation held on Friday, the 12th of September, 2025.

This new film is a follow-up to the 2023 animated feature, The Super Mario Bros. Movie.
That movie, a collaboration between Nintendo and the animation studio Illumination, was a massive, record-breaking global success, becoming one of the highest-grossing animated films of all time and earning widespread praise from fans and critics alike.

It featured a star-studded voice cast, including Chris Pratt as Mario, Anya Taylor-Joy as Princess Peach, Charlie Day as Luigi, and Jack Black as Bowser.
This newly announced sequel will be based on the critically acclaimed 2007 game for the Nintendo Wii, Super Mario Galaxy.

The game is a fan-favorite in the series, known for its imaginative, space-themed setting, its epic orchestral score, and its unique, gravity-defying platforming gameplay.
It’s widely expected that the new film’s story will introduce the powerful and enigmatic protector of the cosmos, Rosalina, a character who first debuted in the original Wii game.

The announcement of a new film based on this specific title is a highly anticipated and exciting development for fans of the franchise.

A new trailer has been revealed, showing the first glimpse of what fans can expect from the upcoming film:
Further details regarding the cast and production staff for the new movie have not yet been announced, though it’s widely expected that the majority of the original film’s cast will reprise their roles.

“The Super Mario Galaxy Movie” is scheduled to be released in April of 2026.
