Sanrio teams up with Japan’s top toy car brand for adorable new blind box series
Takara Tomy is hoping that a new collaboration with Sanrio introduces a new range of fans to their popular “Tomica” toy car series.
The new “TOMICA TUNES” series recently launched with a range of blind boxed miniatures that combines some of Sanrio’s most belovef characters with Takara Tomy’s die-cast car models.
Tomica, Takara Tomy’s die-cast miniature car series, was first launched in 1970 as Japan’s initial domestic line of palm-sized car models. This year marks the 55th anniversary of the popular brand.
Tomica regularly collaborates with popular series and characters, with previous released seeing the creation of miniature vehicle figures based on the Dragon Ball series and a replica of a real life vehicle used by an Evangelion themed motorsport team.
The “TOMICA TUNES SANRIO CHARACTERS Vol. 1” set, which was released on the 31st of May, aims to “tune up Tomica with a cute twist”.
The initial set features six Sanrio characters riding Tomica vehicles: Hello Kitty, Pompompurin, Pochacco, Cinnamoroll, My Melody, and Kuromi. There is also one secret character, making a total of seven variations.

Each figure is sold in blind packaging, meaning the specific character inside is unknown until opened.
Looking ahead, the second installment of the “TOMICA TUNES” series will feature a collaboration with Disney characters.
“TOMICA TUNES DISNEY CHARACTERS Vol.1” is scheduled for release on July 19th and will include Mickey Mouse, Baymax, Lotso, Miguel, Stitch, Donald Duck and one secret type.
The suggested retail price for each “TOMICA TUNES SANRIO CHARACTERS Vol.1” is 1,320 yen (including tax).
