Release date set and characters revealed for Danganronpa creator’s new game “Shuten Kyodan”

“Shuten Kyodan” has officially been revealed as an ambitious multi-genre adventure game, with the release date and cast information also confirmed.
The game, which has a title that can be translated as “End of Heaven Cult”, is poised to offer a truly unique gaming experience by blending five distinct game systems within a single title.

This “multi-genre adventure” concept promises to deliver a broad range of gameplay styles, from stealth action horror to multi-perspective visual novels, ensuring that players will encounter varied challenges and narrative approaches.

Kazutaka Kodaka, the driving force behind “Too Kyo Games”, is renowned for his work on the Danganronpa series, which gained widespread critical acclaim for its unique blend of visual novel storytelling, murder mystery elements, and challenging class trials.
His signature style often involves intricate plots, unexpected twists, and a dark, psychological undertone, all elements that are clearly present in “Shuten Kyodan.”

The highly anticipated title is set to launch worldwide on September 5th, 2025, for Nintendo Switch and on PC via the Steam and DMM GAMES platforms.
Accompanying the release date announcement, pre-orders for “Shuten Kyodan” have commenced today, May 22nd.
A teaser trailer was released earlier this month and a new official website and the game’s first trailer have now been been unveiled, providing a deeper look into the game’s characters, lore, intricate game systems, and details regarding the various editions available for purchase.

The game’s premise is set against a backdrop of humanity’s impending extinction, with only 168 days remaining until the end of the world.

In this chaotic and despair-ridden landscape, a new religion called “Shutenkyo” has emerged. This cult embraces humanity’s upcoming demise, gaining popularity and eventually establishing its own small nation.
The central mystery of the game begins when the leader of Shutenkyo is mysteriously murdered. Through an unexplained miracle, the guru is resurrected as the protagonist, Shimobe Rei.

The resurrection is incomplete as Rei has lost all memories prior to his murder and is fated to die again after just four days.
Two enigmatic figures, Himel and Miktor, who identify themselves as “angels” appear to Rei. They inform him that to achieve true, complete resurrection, he must undergo a divine ritual known as “God’s Trial”.

This trial requires Rei to uncover the identity of his killer and eliminate them, setting the stage for a tense, four-day search for the culprit, with not only his own life but also the fate of the world hanging in the balance.
The cast of characters who hold significant positions within the Shutenkyo nation and cult have been revealed:
- Shimobe Rei (Protagonist): The resurrected cult leader, operating under a temporary name to hide his true identity as he seeks his murderer.

- Angel: Himel: An impatient and impulsive guide who, despite their role guiding the player, is not a fan of the cult.

- Angel: Miktor: Himel’s calm and analytical counterpart, who offers guidance but often evade deeper questions.

- Shige Inugami (Ministry of Justice Official): A free-spirited and elusive individual with extensive legal knowledge.

- Ushitora Yugen (Ministry of Health Official): The director of Shuten General Hospital, known as the “Gatekeeper of the Borderlands” for his medical skills.

- Teko Ion (Ministry of Science Executive): A genius with an unmeasurable IQ and the “Universal Genius” behind most of the nation’s technology, but also an individual who lacks social graces.

- Kuroshikan Hoso (Ministry of Education Official): The “Magician of Words” who is rumored to manipulate information and secretly desires leadership of the cult.

- Fushicho Manji (Ministry of Security Official): The hot-tempered “Queen of Heathen Hunting” who maintains public order and is fiercely protective of the nation.

A core feature of “Shuten Kyodan” is that the branching story will affect how you play the game.
Players’ choices regarding who they suspect among the five ministry executives will not only alter the story path, but also fundamentally change the game they experience:
- Ministry of Justice: Mystery Adventure: A detective adventure where players use a “snapping” system to investigate clues and deduce the murderer.

- Ministry of Health: Extreme Escape Adventure: A dark 3D labyrinth filled with intellectual puzzles and deadly traps, requiring players to survive until the end.

- Ministry of Science: Multi-perspective visual novel: A visual novel utilizing a chronological flowchart, allowing players to experience the story from multiple character viewpoints.

- Ministry of Education: Romance Adventure: A peculiar romantic adventure where Rei must increase the favorability of three girls to find the real Hozuki and obtain an antidote.

- Ministry of Security: Stealth Action Horror: A 3D stealth game where players must evade the killer Nephilim and overcome challenges to survive.

“Shuten Kyodan” will be available in three editions:
- Standard Version: 6,980 yen
- Digital Deluxe Edition: 9,180 yen – Includes the game, Visual Art Book, and Mini Soundtrack)

- Deluxe Version (Limited Quantity): 13,580 yen – Includes the game, Visual Art Book, Mini Soundtrack, and a commemorative “National Founding Memorial Snow Globe” featuring illustrations of Shimobe Rei, Himel, and Miktor.

A pre-order bonus for the Nintendo Switch version (package, download, deluxe, and digital deluxe) is a special prequel novel, “Before the Murders case: Manji Fushicho”.

This novel, written by Too Kyo Games and supervised by Kazutaka Kodaka, delves into the origins of Fushicho Manji five years before the main game and depicting her “awakening test” and the decision that forged her into the “Queen of Heathen Hunting”.
This bonus will only be available in limited quantity for physical versions of the game.
With its innovative multi-genre approach, compelling story, and the creative vision of Kazutaka Kodaka, “Shuten Kyodan” is poised to be a significant release for adventure game enthusiasts when it launches on September 5th.
The new game follows the The Hundred Line: Last Defence Academy which was released earlier this year and has seen Kazutaka Kodaka recently discuss a possible anime adaptation.
